Hello all. Does anyone know a reputable dealer for sump / refuge life? I live in upstate NY, do you think it would be to cold to order now?
I know it's getting to cold for me :?. Thanks
most of the time copepods and other "critters" are seeded deep within live rock and when in a refugium they will reporduce quite rapidly because there is nothing eating them up. So I would just put some live rock in there and wait acouple weeks keeping an eye on it. Eventually you will be able to just shine a blue or red light in the refugium and see tons of tiny "flea" looking things all over the place.

usafresq1,
thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately I had a small crash this weekend and lost a 6 yr old clam and 5 yr elegens (you can see them on my site).
It has been a very sad and long weekend .
I have an old Mandarin and I don’t want him to not have food. It appears that almost all of the worms and pods in my sump are dead. As soon as I find out what happened, I need to re-populate it.
Very sorry about your tank problem. I lost my entire reef early last year and am just now rejuvenating it. When you dont' know exactly what caused the crash, it's even more frustating. Hope you figure it out soon.
I just bought a detritrivore kit from Inland Aquatics and simultaneously got the 9 for $99 mix n'match special from IPSF. Both arrived in great shape and I'm now anxiously trying to make sure the pods multiply profusely before I start introducing fish back into the display tank. I heartily recommend both the above sources. Others will tell you just to get a handful of "bottom sludge" from your lfs and I believe that's a good suggestion. Personally, I also believe in creating as much biodiversity as possible and that's why I elected to add both Inland's and IPSF's fauna to my new DSB.
IPSF = Indo-Pacific Sea Farms http://www.ipsf.com
Last month they had free shipping with a 9 for $99 package. When I ordered earlier this month, I believe the shipping was still included in the $99.
