IME the Remora will outpeform the Bakpak.
If you go for the Remora, plan on the bubble elimin
ator. My friend has one and finally had to use the bubble box because lots of bubbles were still pouring into the tank after about 2 months of continuous use.
Judging from my experience with these skimmers I think it's a modest increase in performance. IMO, not worth the $200 (skimmer + bubble box).
Not sure what your budget is, but if you want a really significant performance increase I'd look elsewhere. Several people here have mentioned the
lifereef hang-on unit as being one of the best available right now. Of course, it's not cheap either.
Also, the hang-on Turboflotors now come with a better pump and are supposed to perform well too. That would probably only run you about $50 more than the Remora w/bubble trap. The PM HOT-1 is also an option. I had a skimmer of similar design that was prone to overflowing, however, and I've heard of that happening to HOT-1 owners too. Not sure on that though - never actually owned the PM.
Good luck with whatever you decide. HTH.
