Regular cleaning...

From the sounds of it regular cleaning and a routine replacement (say every 3 years) of pumps is CHEAPER than the possible risks....

How about once a year take’m apart. Scrape nothing! Drop the parts in a small tub of pool acid. Wait until the smoke clears. Rinse, reassemble and reinstall. Unless it's a RIO, trash can it and go rent another before you get electrocuted.

Don't buy a Rio. I had 2 2100's and both went bad. One gave me a mild shock when it stopped the other put me on the floor. I am not joking! It put me on the floor. Rio pumps run great but will alomost kill you when they fail.

FWIW there are two versions of the RIO's. One is sold for aquarium use and one is UL listed and sold for use in fountains. The easiest way to tell them apart is the UL listed one has a thick cord and the one for us the zapper 8O has a thin one. The man that imports them is the same man who manufactures the West Coast Aquanetics line of chillers. You can get the UL version through him. Sorry I lost the number.

Regular maitence will prevent failure.

I kept my rio 800 super clean, along with everthing else in my aquarium. Don't be fooled by this theory. My rio 800 blew up and put some sort of oil into the water. Luckly I was their to do a water change, and crank up the magnum carbon canister filter. Or I would have lost a lot more than a shrimp and a couple of crabs.

new rio's are OIL FREE according to the manufacturer and have titanium shafts
