Scott Michael's book on sharks lists a whole bunch of sharks that aren't collected. There's lists that he titles something like "Sharks that would be great in home aquaria but that are not available". So he may have included it to be thorough, not because they're available. Did you try just entering the species name on metacrawler?? That's how I found a site that sells Centropyge boylei, the fish us thread thieves were talking about. :D

To look at the arguement another way, if it is so rare in the hobby, do you think there is enough collective knowledge from fellow hobbyists, literature, etc. to safely warrant trying to keep the moray (or peppermint)?

I suppose it is your choice if you have that much disposable income, but I definitely wouldn't pay $10,000(getting their head examined first! ) or $10 for something that no one, including me, knew how to take care of...

Goldenboy, ever thought about pm'ing Scott Michael on this board or posting this thread in the Aquarium Fish Forum? You'll probably get a quicker response.

I wasn't aware that he was on this board. And I'm not quite sure what you mean about "aquarium fish forum". Is that a web site?

Oh yeah I finally decided that if I was unable to find these morays that I would go with a jewel moray. I've been able to find them on several sites.

Paul: Why don't you get G. melatremus? These can be gorgeous, don't get bigger than 8" and are often available from Hawiai. The Marine Center should be able to get them for you.

When Scott writes he goes for thoroughness, so you will find species mentioned that you probably will never see in the trade, but he usually mentions this in the text, or only discusses those readily available in the actual article as opposed to being listed just in a table.

Aloha!

OK - three questions:

1) Is that your tank? (very nice)
2) If so, where did you get the peppermint angel?
3) And the question on everyone's mind - How much $$$ ?

No. It belongs to someone in Japan.

2) If so, where did you get the peppermint angel?

They bought at a pet store.

3) And the question on everyone's mind - How much $$$?

No idea but I think $14,000 is an exaggeration ... closer to $5000 would be my guess.

I think the very first specimen of C. boylei sold for 14k. I'm sure the price has gone down considerably since then. It's a bargain now!! Awesome pictures!!

I find scott michael particularly complete when he describes fish familys (like this list of morays) and how to care fore them. I would guess that he has first dibbys on many of these fish, cuz he can. Ever see his talks where he shows all these ambon devilfish, etc- , then he says he had them in his aquarium. I would guess he somehow collects them after he photographs them or he has some special connection to get them.

However just becase he writes about these fish doesn't mean you can get them.
I would suspect a good majority of the fish he described never makes its way into the hobby or to the USA. I would guess that rare fish are collected all the time, they just don't come to amercia (mainly because places like Japan are more than willing to pay top dollar for these rare fish-check out splash to see their prices), or if they do its one or a few fish.
Next, if a rare fish comes into a wholsaler, they know its rare and it goes immediately to a high dollar place. Marine center does get rare fish and they know what is and isn't rare, and they ask prices accordingly. Randy knows what comes in and if he says a certain fish doesn't come in...then I would bet dollar to donuts the fish doesn't come in.
Case in point are the rhinopias, marinecenter has one, their asking prices is over $1800, they know its rare, the wholsaler knew it was rare,
Last point, I've prolly never seen 95% of the morays in scott micheals book in any store in my 18yrs of fish keeping
my opinion

I hate metacrawler, I did use google however and came up with nothing. Maybe I'll go ahead and try metacrawler just in case.

I am actually considering that particular moray among others. I prefer the long headed toothy species over the boxy headed species though.
the other morays that I am considering are enchelycore carychoa, g. herri, g. miliaris and g.chylospilus

BTW, thanks for posting that other peppermint angel pic. It made me change my mind about it. I think that one is gorgeous.

Charles I have read most of you work and really appreciate the fact that you take the time to corespond with other hobbyists on this board.

Hey Texman,
How about a clarion instead? It'll live long after the peppermint has passed away, is much hardier and is very hard to come by these days.
Fund me a trip...I'll get you one.

Hey Cortez Marine:

You just want me to pay for your trip to Cabo, don't you. If anyone is going diving in Cabo in the near future on my credit card, it will be me and my new girlfriends which I will be meeting at Squid Roe.

I know that someone in FL paid $5000 for one in 1989.

Its part of the Advanced Aquarist Online website ... if you click on that link you will be taken to their homepage and links to the forums there too ...works fron reefs.org or from there.

Though Scott does have an area there, he is not obligated to post or reply, and does not get paid to answer questions there, unlike other boards and their "expert" forum areas. In fact every column and feature article has a section on Advanced Aquarist where you can ask the writer questions about what they wrote. Again, they are not obligated to reply, they don't get paid to do so, and don't always respond immediately. But since discussions generally tend to die-out pretty quickly, they usually reply. Other sections such as the chemistry column are pretty active though.

BTW, thanks for posting that other peppermint angel pic. It made me change my mind about it. I think that one is gorgeous.

Glad you like it ... now.

I do what I can. I used to moderate a forum on Compuserve (Fishnet) back in the mid-80's and early 90's ... that was enough for me ... I decided I needed more of a life outside and was not being very productive in other areas. :)
