12 times I've used it with every imaginable tank inhabitant and I still have had no loss of life.

Make sure you do a water change the next day though!

treating cyano is only a bandaid for the real problems in your tank that are allowing cyano. . . if you really want something that is reef safe that works try this . . .

http://www.petsolutions.com/default.aspx?ItemID=84901110&eid=GL5003122NT&sid=GOOGLE

its Erythromycin - an antibiotic commonly prescribed to human patients suffering from bronchitis and pneumonia . . .

usually one tablet per 30-40 gallons will kill off the cyano bloom within 12 hours. pull your carbon and TURN OFF your skimmer. . . when oxygenated this stuff really makes your skimmer go nuts! This stuff works and is safe but like i said its not addressing the water quality/lighting issues causing your tank to have cyano in the first place. good luck!

Actually, erythromycin may kill all your bacteria that reduce nitrogen compounds, resulting in a tank crash and death to ALL inhabitants.

DO NOT USE ERYTH.

i've seen it used many times at the reef store i used to work at. . . never had a tank crash. . . it says right on the box that it does not disrupt the natural nitrosomas bacteria life cycle - i've never used it on my own tank because i keep my tank parameters and bulbs in order so that i do not have cyano in the first place. . . if you really want to get rid of cyano get a good skimmer, replace old bulbs, get a good phosphate remover, use an RO unit and stop over feeding . . . cyano is a symptom of improper husbandry. . . just my two cents. . .

**please note the dosage i stated is only 25% that of the reccommended dosage for the treatment of fish parasites. . .

I still say this stuff works amazingly, and I will continue to use if I ever have this problem again.

What stuff? Chemi-Clean? The OP asked about potassium permanganate. It's pure speculation on your part as to what the ingredients are in Chemi-Clean since they are not stated on the label, which for me is reason enough not to trust it.
