saltcritter, my lighting is 4 - 400W Iwsaski and 760W of VHO - mostly actinic. I run a calcium reactor and protien skimmer and the DIY kalkwasser dosing setup. I believe in lots of flow and am still working on adding some more. When you get closer to setting up your big system keep us updated with posts on the board and I'm sure people that are much more knowledgable than me will pitch in and help on getting it planned and setup appropriately.
Dr. Reef, I'm not sure which pic you saw a sun coral sitting out in the open? I do have a sun coral in the tank although in all the pics I could find it is almost so well hidden away I wouldn't think anyone would recognize it at all. Maybe you saw another coral but mistook it for a sun coral? I've had it for 3 years and it has done very well as I feed it nearly everyday. Periodically I will find baby sun coral polyps scattered around the tank as the tubastrea spreads by spitting out fully developed polyps. The main reason I have it tucked away is to help keep the fish from picking at it when I feed it as they have discovered it is easy to steal the food out of it's polyps if left alone. Although many say that sun corals should not be exposed to full light I've found this to not be true as in my old tank I had it under 400W MH without any problems. The main concern is that algae could grow on the corals tissue under the light, but with proper feeding of the coral and flow and water conditions I never had any problems with algae growing on the sun coral.
