Tang police more bad than good, IMO.

-Why is that Dan, do you think there is no room for the tang police in this hobby? I mean, everyone knows why dizzy feels this way no matter how he tries to justify it, the tang police are a nightmare for LFS managers  .

The mere fact that somebody posts on here means they are trying to learn, and jumping down their throat does nothing positive. I just think if one person makes a comment about someones tang situation thats fine, but the other 8 people should refrain from piling on.

Unless the persons a jerk- in that case go for it!

Steve,

I agree with you 100% that the Tang Police are trying to destroy the local fish stores. Your approach seems to be make this hobby so unenjoyable that no one will want to get in it. Seems like a great way to protect the reefs. Good luck with it.

IMO anyone can find a reason why you shouldn't any species. But just take their advice for just that. It's just advice. They aren't the real police and don't create laws. You won't be arrested for buying a tang. I agree sometimes the words on the board can get a little harsh, but again, those are just words too...not any worse then the guy that honks and flips you off on your way home from work...

As a tang keeper and tang lover (only four years), and advocate of good feeding and 100g plus in tank size for the 'average' teenage tang........based on my own observations, I can only hope that the infiltration of newbie comments lately with their tang police comments will subside, as, they themselves begin to realize what has gone on for years before them.

People get sick and tired of the same mistakes. They get cranky. Sometimes, they leave to take a break when they can't take it any more.

Get over it. Read, learn, do the best you can for those tangs or whatever you will take in. I had the money to buy bigger tanks....do you?

And I just sent a tang to a new home. I shed tears and still miss him...will you?

Crap....I'm starting to sound like naesco now.......... 8)

These people don't react with anger against you personally. It is something stored up for a long time, from a lot of stupid people. At least, that is what I believe.

Yes, Emily every day, in every way, you are close to becoming one of the beloved tang police.
You are correct in your assessment.

If someone's response on a bulletin board "takes all the fun out of it", methinks "someone" needs to toughen up or stay away from bulletin boards.

I have a hard time understanding why it is perfectly acceptable for someone to recommend a liberal stocking level, but the converse is met with scorn and ridicule. I assume that when someone asks for an opinion they are expecting to get them.

I would love to have responded to this thread, but unfortunately it has been closed. http://reefs.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t ... ce&start=0

Why is "tang police" used with such derision? I don't think many of the opinions offered by these aquarists differ from those expressed by Scott Michael and other noted authors when discussing tank size requirements, so why shoot the messenger?

If you notice Briand, The so Called Tang Police  always jump in and give negative infor. There are no such rules! They ripped into me when i first come on the board, i remember it well 8O The tangs didnt exist, the tank, my idols and perhaps even myself were a figment of my own immagination :?: But i proved, so who's in the right, me or them! i must say i'm not happy with people chucking tangs in small tanks! i'm really not happy with people keeping them in fish only setups, but i will not preach only advise to the best of my experiance.
Do i notice friction in the ranks of the police 8O i have had many a chat with you lot! quite funny sometimes, so lets all pull together and share our knowledge and experiances with the newbiesand other reef keepers alike, and STOP being so negative.
I know for one you have very strong views! but count to ten before you dive in, just remember we were ALL newbies ONCE!

Actually Gary, I usually count to 100 before I dive in :)

It is an unfortunate fact that trolls do appear from time to time on the boards. You have to admit that your tank isn't exactly one we encounter every day :) Don't judge people too harshly for being skeptical. We have been burned before :D Beautiful tank, btw.

As for the topic at hand, you are right, I do have strong views (have we bumped heads before? I don't remember....). I HOPE that I post these views as my opinion, based on my personal experience, observations, and through research of noted aquarists. To me, that is what a bulletin board like this is all about...aquarists sharing information. If you think that sometimes the "tang police" are harsh, consider that many of these people have been surfing these boards for some years, and have encountered more "my tang is dying" and "my tang has ich" threads than imaginable. At some point, you become a little jaded :)

I hope that all of these threads impart some knowledge and at least some minds are opened a little bit to both sides of the issue. For me, I will always strive to offer what I feel to be the optimal environment for my fish.

imho, being a newbie is not an excuse to be cruel to tangs, or any other defenseless living thing.

as soon as i get my tank set up, i will be applying to join the tang police. i think we should get badges made, i work in the logo/recognition industry, who's interested? :P

I don't believe people keep tangs to be "cruel". They recognize that these fish are wonderful to keep, and often want to get support for keeping them in tanks smaller than is perhaps ideal. It seems to be common that people asking for advice on tank size have already formed their own opinion before asking :)

nothing against keeping tangs, just against keeping tangs in tanks that don't give them the space they need :D i think fish look best when they're able to swim freely with plenty of room.

i personally plan to have one yellow tang in my 120gal when i get it going, along with a pair of percs. we'll see about a few other additions after it's well-established. but the tang will certainly be the biggest citizen.

I would like to add in my .02 cents.

I agree with the philosophy of the tang police. Cruelty to animals should be discouraged with prejudice. Being a Newbie myself, I just had to have it pointed out that my foxface will have to go and that anything bigger than a dwarf angel is nix in my 65g. I can live with that, and Im thankful for the advice. I will plan on putting in a much much bigger tank in the distant future. Not everyone who is asking for advice truely has his mind made up. Ive seen several with tanks my size with tangs, and I thought it would be nice, but I will not be doing it now.

However, before you blow your "Intelligence gasket". Please remember that many of the lfs and people you are talking to are not. They are not concerned with such things. They are approaching the situation with a completely different way of viewing the world. It goes somthing like this.

"Heck we slaughter cattle for food, pack live chickens in 5 inch tall crates, cut roads through habitats, use dynamite and cyanide for fishing....Exactly what is the big deal if i guy a $39.00 Hippo tang and end up throwing it in the toilet after a couple years.....geeze".

That my folks is what some of these people are thinking (though they would never admit it out right and will justify it with 40 other reasons about why it would be ok).

Thanks for the advice, I know I personally will try and be a bit more realistic and conservative in my expectations/practices.
