hey all
i saw this stuff at the LFS that was calcium based algae but it was green and looked more like a plant. the guy at the lfs told me that it would use up calcium, and i probably shouldnt get it unless i really like its astetics. shouldnt this stuff be just as good as regular coraline algae at reducing N? i only dose kalk, so if it doesnt help my tank at all, id rather not waste the calcium. any thoughts?

Sounds like Halimeda sp. macroalgae. It's a calcifying macroalgae and it's very pretty (at least to me). :) Do a google.com image search to verify this tho. It should be a decent user of N (similar to other macroalgaes given the proper conditions), so if you want to use it for aethetic reasons, go for it.

I get mounds of halimeda growing up out of my rock constantly. I can't keep other macro algaes alive very well, but this stuff grows like mad. They have root systems, which probably help. They also aren't grazed upon by tangs and rabbitfish. They don't seem to matter as far as Ca consumption goes in comparison to all of the frags in my tank.
