Hello, i just purchased a standpipe and am confused which end goes up and which goes down. The one end has a threaded fitting, but i specifically told the guy that it was for a slip bulkhead. So either the threaded end goes up and the other end fits the bulkhead or he messed up. please help.

I think you have it put together wrong? The right side should go down. I think there is a cap near the sponge that should be on the other side (Left). Did it come assembled?

King James is right. The right side should go down into the bulkhead. The left side should have an end-cap on it (with a TINY air hole drilled in it). I'd lose the sponge filter on the inlet altogether. It's just going to trap detrius and act as a nitrate factory.

I suspect the guy who sold it to you disregarded that you had a slip bulkhead and gave you a threaded connection (right side) instead. That sucks, man. Probably will have to send it back to get the right connection.

Even if you had a threaded bulkhead, would you have enough room to turn the pipe?
BTW, you are going to want an end cap on top with a way to regulate the air.

hi.
If you don't have room to turn the pipe, install the pipe on the bulkhead first, then install the bulkhead.

Hope that was only $5.00 because it cost about $2.00 to make it. Take that to the local hardware and they can give you the stuff to make a new one without the thread on the bottom. You do need a cap on the top.

The shipping cost for that thing got to cost more than the cost to make it.
BTW, you will need a cap on the end with a small hole drill to limit the amount of aircome in. This will decrease the flow noise alot.

The piece, as you can see, with the sponge is slotted. It also has a cap at the end of it. There is no hole in the end cap however. What you guys are saying is that i should drill one in there? what size? Also the top of the standpipe is wide open, is that supposed to be like that? it turned out that he just gave me the spare threaded part, it pulled right off and then fit into my slip bulkhead.

.

-I would take this end cap off and leave the sponge off. Those slots will get stopped up over time, and if you don't catch it in time, well the tank could overflow.

-No, this is where the end cap needs to be with the hole in it. The size of the hole you have to play with in order to determine how much air to let in. What I did was to place a reducing fitting in mine that would accept 1/2" pvc. I then inserted a 3" pc of pvc into this and a ball valve on the end of that. This allows me to adjust the air flow as needed.

The water level in your overflow will be at a steady level and you should hear no slurping.

I would just put a PVC cap on it and drill a 1/4 hole through the end cap while it is installed on the PVC. Drill through one side of the cap and continue drilling through the side wall of the PVC, but not through the opposite side. There is no need to glue this piece on. If drilled like stated above, you can simply twist the endcap to adjust the size of the whole. Worked great for me! This idea is from Richard Durso website!

I did the same thing...but my holes weren't big enough! Had to drill two.

I got lucky, first hole worked perfectly and I didn't even have to make an adjustment! :)

alright, thanks. sounds like a good idea. So this wont be a problem that my bulkhead is 1.5in and so is the pvc pipe. because on durso site it says it should be bigger than bulkhead.
