OK...so I finally bit-the-bullet and ordered a CS8-2 for my 135g FOWLR. I am fighting a nasty dino problem, and was told I need better skimming (had a Seaclone 100 before).

Wow what a difference!!!! I mean, this thing has only been going for 3 days, and I have removed more gunk than that Seaclone did in 6 months!!! Not only that, but the color and smell of the gunk is very, very nasty...

Anyway, I guess you all were right....you DO get what you pay for when it comes to these higher-end skimmers!

OMG! You were using a Seclone 100 on a 135?? I'm using one on a 30 (for now) and I think it's a piece of $&*%! (Yeah, I'm new too!) I'll probably mod it just to get by until I can afford to do better.. JEEZ! How long did you make your tank suffer with that thing?

I have a CS6-2 for my 150g and the hydrogen sulfide smell from the skimmate is overpowering. I just love how easy it is to set up and clean. The only modification I've made is to wrap some plastic raingutter grating around the output tube as replacement for the sponge since I don't want to deal with cleaning the output sponge on a regular basis.

I am new to this, and was told that algea blooms were normal for a new tank. At about 5 months, I had an explosion of dino (brown slime) EVERYWHERE! I am already seeing it slow down after having the EuroReef going for 4 days now.

How often do I need to clean the sponge? The frequency of cleaning the cup is no problem right now....It is skimming so much gunk out that the smell after one day could knock a fly off a horse turd from across the room! Thats enough incentive for me to get it dumped daily!!!

I find the sponge on mine is very coarse cell, and doesn't trap all that much debris. I guess I grab it when I do the cup, once a week or so.

Hmm.. Took me long enough but I've finally JOINED THE RANKS!! :D :D

ES5-2 arrived late last week and plug & play it's rockin!

I was running MAJOR amounts of carbon and poly to make up for the fact that I had a skimmer that sucked .. <cough> SEACLOWN </cough> So there wasn't all that much left for the Euro to start pulling out, but it definitely acts the way a real skimmer should.. :D

I think you mean Cyano...as in Cyanobacteria (some call it Cyno) or Blue-green algae. It's a slimy film that usually covers the substrate. You may also want to kick up your circulation. Cyno usually begins to grow in "low-flow" locations as well.

Awesome purchase by-the-way. I wish I could do the same right now.

I just got my CS8.3 today to replace a Turboflotor 1000. Got it shipped to work, came home at lunch, had it up and running in about ten minutes. Very simple setup. It looks pretty huge in my 50gal sump too. I gave it a few hours to break in and just raised the outflow pipe. Hopefully I'll be getting rid of a bunch of nasty gunk very soon.

I use a AquaC Remora on my 29 gallon and it has been really good to me. MUCH better than my old skimmer. You should consider it when you are read to get a new skimmer.

I've heard they're pretty good. I may decide to switch out the suckclone for the Remora when I go to setup the 10 gal. nano... Especially considering the amount of bubbles the suckclone dumps back into the tank.. (AND no surface skimming of any sort...)

As for getting a new skimmer... Got one! :) See above... Euro ES5-2, and sitting in a 10 gal. sump the thing looks MONSTROUSLY beautiful! :D :D

I was looking at the Euro ES5-2 for my 55 gal also. but i hope to soon upgrade to a 90 gal. Is this skimmer to small for this? It's within the upper end of my price range for now but i could hold off for a few more months to get the CS6-1. the 55 has no skimmer now at all. I have lots of trouble with cyno and a red bubble algae. please help

If you're planning on upgrading your tank to a 90, I'd personally step up the skimmer.. The ES5-2 is rated for 40+.. The 6-1 at 75+ and the 6-2 at 100+.. If it were ME, I'd look at the 6-2 instead of the 6-1. Everything I've heard says to go higher than what the ratings say and 90 is more than twice 40, so yeah, at least the 6-1 if you can't do the 6-2..

Just my .02 though..

The "dino" (a.k.a. "brown slime) isn't algae. It is more likely a diatom bloom, diatoms are unicellular..IIRC, but aren't exactly like algae. O! This taxonomy thing, eh? Then we have dinoflagellates...never dealt with that (at least as called dinoflagellates).

Isn't a diatom bloom part of the initial long-term cycling process for a new system? I've almost always had them early on when starting a new system. - Course, I've never had a REAL skimmer till now either! :D

from what i have seen so far,JEF says the CS6-1 is rated for 200gals
and the CS6-2 for 250 gal. so then wouldn't the CS6-1 already be larger than what i need. or is that 200gal rating not to be believed?

Yes, they pretty much are par for the course. I just wanted to clarify that they are a different critter from microalgae. Glad you've got a real skimmer now! Have fun cleaning 'er out!

I dunno.. Check Euro-Reef's site

Hoooo buddy! That stuff is NASTY! Someone once compared the skimmate their new Euro was producing to being able to "knock a fly off a pile" of dung from 50 yards or something like that.. Now I see what they mean!
