when you get outbreaks or you got the only one you've had, how long did it take to clear up...

and if you used anything... what did you use?

I've had one in my new tank- lasted 3 or 4 days. When the tank was fairly new I turned off a circulation device and forgot to turn it back on. Cyano next day- getting lots of flow going an being extra careful cleaning the skimmer knocked it back.

It didn't. I had perfict water conditions and the slime would not go away. I fought it for 6 months in my 150 gal sps tank and finally had to bring out the big guns Red Slime Remover from Ultrlaife. I've NEVER been one to use meds in my tank but I felt I had no choice. The slime would just not go away.

Golfish,
Any theories on the cause of the slime? what were the results with the Red Slime Remover?

I got the plague after about 1 year.
It didn't go away on it's own for 6 months.
I used Chemi-Clean by Boyd Ent
it took 3 treatments, but it's all gone now

no adverse affects on fish or corals

cyano is a bacteria, it feeds on dom dissolved organic matter and other waste, heavy skimming and water changes will get rid of it. but whatever you do dont stir it up on the sand bottom to manually remove it because it will spread over nite.

I had a two month outbreak when my tank was about 6-8 months old. i tried a number of things, but when i finally decieded it was time for "all out war" this is what i did:

cleaned skimmer and gave it extra attention to make sure it was at 100%
changed from 4x96 watt PC's to 2x96 watt PC's & 2x400 watt halides
siphoned out as much as possable and then killed the lights for three days.
checked and corrected calcium, alk
did 20 gallon water changes on each of the three 'lights out' days.

after i resumed normal photo period, it never came back.

I had an outbreak of it that I couldnt get rid of for awhile and used red slime remover. it took about 3 days for it to dissapear, and it has never come back. I noticed no adverse reactions to any livestock. also I only used half the recommended dose.

Sometimes this stuff will thrive in a tank with perfict conditions. I tried for 6 months to get rid of it but it only made things worse. Heavy skimming, water changes didn't help one bit, I even added an algae scrubber. A few hours after adding the red slime remover the tank water looked and felt like it had Jello added to it. The sps stop extending their polyps and the slime started to die. I'd say by the next day the slime was gone and I started doing water changes. I changed 30 gal of water 4 times, once every other day (150 gal tank) I think after the 4th WC I was able to get the skimmer started back up. I had a tank full of sps and really hated to do it but it got to the point where I had no choice. The good: the slime is and never came back, the bad: I lost one large brttle star.
