Dead calm.....

My power went out the other day because of the snow related conditions. As I sat and waited, I began to get nervous thinking, How long is this going to last. I do not have a back up generator or battery...so how long can a tank survive without power? The power went back on in about an hour and the tank was fine.

i had the power go out for 4 day a couple of years ago i wrapped the tank in my blankie to help with the temp, everything was fine, i was doing water changes to help with the oxygen levels, eversince then i have a generator.

That's scary when you invest thousands into a tank, not to mention the time and effort, to think of losing it all because of a power outage.

If you're home during an outage, you can always give your tank water a good stirring periodically to keep the water oxygenated.

IMO the least anybody should have for power failures is a battery powered air pump.

As far I as I know, the legnth of time before the oxygen runs out depends on the water vloume, stocking, and a few oter things. I've had power outtages a few times, the longest lasting about 2 hours. I drop if a couple of battery powered airators used for bait buckects... During that specific 2 hour outtage didnt observe and fast breathing ect...

I had an outage of 12-14 hours a few months back due to a storm, with no ill effects to the tank. I was a nervous wreck, though.

Falling temperatures are the biggest problem if you live in a place with cold winters. We had a power outage of 8 days about 7 years ago. I had just moved into the house and thankfully didn't have a tank then. I have generator now, as well as a woodstove and a cigarette lighter inverter, but I still don't know how I would handle 8 days...

When I'm tooling around in my tank, I have the pumps off for up to 2 hours. I'm getting to think that my corals kinda like that occasional dead calm period. No problems. (Heaters on).

This summer I going to install one of those diesel generator from Sears that would start up all by itself when the power is out. With a full tank, it can run for days. It would cost me around $5,000 or more. How many has one of those at home ? I like to hear how it work for you.

I have a motorhome with a 6500 watt generator...comes in handy when we have outages here...just run some cords from the camper thru the windows and wala. Tho my neighbors may wonder about the web of power cords.

I have a 3500w portable. But friends with a greenhouse have a diesel Cummins 6 cyl, same motor in dodge trucks and runs everything including their house. All automatic switching. Been great.

If I was to get a big one, I would look into a Natural Gas unit. Saves the hassle of having a fuel tank and the re-fueling. Burns cleaner also.
