Viewing Clams

Just a stupid question: Why is there a color difference when viewing clams from above the tank (looking down on them) and from in front (through the glass)? Is it the class?

It's is totally different. A brown clam may look orange or red, a blue one may look green, and so on. Many look electric from above.

Do you have any clams? You could always slip a mirror in under your hood to view them. Do it when the pumps are off!

It is not a stupid question by any mean. I don't know if Knop's book address this issue, but the color different when view from different angle probably has to do with the phenomenon of light interfence, and other physical/optical properties. Pretty neat stuff if you want to look more into it.

No I don't have any clams, yet. I am getting back in the hobby and should have a tank up and running in the fall (after I move into my new house and finish the basement off!) I was just curious since I was at a local fish store ans saw some clams that looked really cool when I looked down from overtop but looked different through the glass.

Does it really matter what they look like from the top? I mean, maybe they're the 'rarer' clam, but who goes up on a ladder to look at a clam... i mean reallllly? I would just buy what looks the best from where you'd normally see it - in front of the tank. I need to attach a disclaimer to my signature.

Actually, there are special tank with a slanted front that is designed specifically for viewing clam. They are more popular in the Continent and Britain.
