OK, so I have my first mushroom rock (had it about 2 weeks now). It has 12 mushrooms and the larger ones kind of cover part of the small growing ones. I am thinking that maybe I should relocate the larger ones to another rock to allow the smaller ones room to grow. How do you separate and reattach the larger ones and are these the right ones to move? What do you use to cut them loose? First time "fragging" anything, so looking for some guidance here.

Tanks spec's:
55 gal
10 gal sump w/ Mag 7 return
Berlin Classic w/ mag 9
40lb LR
DSB
440W VHO's
Water parameters: OK

Berlin Classic is so so. From what I see on the boards, it doesn't do as good a job as other, but it does alright for now until I can buy a better one.

I want to get shrooms for my tank too....but they are so expensive here right now and my LFS sold the rock I wanted. It was only 15 bucks and had two animals on it that were a Flourescent Bright Green. It was really nice....best shroom I had ever seen. I am so p*ssed that I did not purchase it when I had the chance. I am plannin a 55 gallon.......FOWLR and am looking into a different skimmer from what I am using on my 29gallon. I may go the Wetdry in a sump..and add a skimmer. I am using a Prizm currently and it works great. I just have to clean it about once every two weeks. :D and

You can cut the mushrooms with an exacto knife.
One big shroom can be devided into four smaller ones.
I cut the mushroom into 4 pie shapes.
I then dried off a small piece of live rock with a paper towel.
Then, I used a dab of Crazy glue (gel type) onto the rock(let it set-up for about 30 seconds)
Place the new frags onto a rock, and let the glue cure for about 2 minutes.
In about 2 weeks, they should all be doing fine.

I like the more natural look, so i cut off the shrooms and blended them up! Put the fragments infront of my gooseneck and whalaa! One month later I have one small mushroom growing somewhere in the back of the tank instead of 12! Nah, I've got like 10 or so, up from about 5. They're just growing in random spots. My brother bought another mushroom rock, I keep threatening to frag it... he just kicks me.

I've had the same experience as LFS42. A further tip, keep your super glue gel in the freezer - makes it a bit stiffer and easier to work. As your mushroom colony grows, some will start to detach on their own and wander around the tank until they latch on somewhere. They can become a real problem at times if they get going. Nice problem to have  Then you can frag and sell!

I to was low on shrooms at one time, I had one lonley on growing on a piece of live rock i purchased. they suggested that i use a sharp pair of scissors and cut the "hood" into 4's I did this and they grew, and now they seem to have babies on their own!!
BTW my local fish store frags their shrooms. they sell them for 1.95 each they are just attached to the crushed coral they have in the tank they are kept in, that way you can bring them home and glue them where ever you want

I drank too much coffee last night. I actually didn't blend them, but I might as well have with all the damage I did to the shrooms with my dull exacto knife. Those spores are so small a blender wouldn't do any damage to them... but who wants thaat many mushrooms?

Believe it or not someone on RC actually put their shrooms in a blender and let it rip. I'm sure you could find the thread using a search. From what I read it wasn't much of a success.

it's possible with the blender. jsut use it to chop them up, not blend them into a mushroom smoothie.

I cut the cap off the mushroom and then use scissors to cut the cap into pie shaped wedges. as long as you get a little piece of the mouth on each slice, it will grow into a shroom. I use bridal veil to attatch the frags to the live rock scraps. I have 4 or 5 rocks with frags left in my tank now from when I fragged my green hairys last october. And I stillhave the origional rock that they came on, with mushrooms on it.

The stem from the cut off mushroom will grow back into another mushroom.

You can take a rubberband and put around the rock, and over the head of the mushroom. the pressure will cause the mushroom to split into two smaller shrooms.

if you just slice the cap off and not dice it into 4 it will reaatach faster just by placing it in a cup of rubble in the bootom of the tank . wait a couple weeks then do another.

By the time a month goes by you can cap the fist shroom again. I started with 6 a year ago and currently have about 60 - 70 of them.
