I have a ten gallon nano and I am currently purchasing 2.5 gallon jugs of Arrowhead distilled water from my local market for 3 dollars each.

I have calculated the costs and even for my nano, it wont be long before a RO unit becomes more economical.

I pretty much know nothing about RO units.

First of all, maybe some of you can educate me on the basics/hassle of setting one up? Like is it just "plug-n-play" where i hook it up to a sink and voila. Does it require some plumbing skill? Does it require a dedicated sink? Drilling?

And when I do decide to make the purchase where should I get one? I am looking for a very good quality one that is not overkill in GPD since this is just my Nano.

So what brand and model do you guys recommend and where can I get it?

RO/DI units are pretty much plug-n-play. I purchased my 4 stage SpectraPure 80 GPD unit w/ a faucet attachment the flush valve and that was pretty much it. You screw the input of the RO/DI unit into your faucet and turn on the water. There's a waste water port and a good water port that comes out of the unit. You place the waste water port into your sink drain and the good water port into your container that you want to use to store your RO/DI water. Really that's pretty much it. FYI: when you do get a RO/DI make sure to get the flush valve add-on as they supposedly increase the overall life of your RO/DI unit. When you are done making water, you turn the valve and it cleans out your RO membrane. Pretty slick. :)

FWIW, you *might* find that your local water company sells RO/DI water for less than you're buying it in the supermarket. I know my local water company will sell RO/DI water for like $0.50/gal or your LFS might even do this.

Personally, you can never go wrong by purchasing a SpectraPure RO/DI unit. It's a top quality unit and I've been very happy with mine over the last 3 years. To compare pricing on RO/DI units, please visit our "Sponsors" link at the top of the forum. My personal favorite is Premium Aquatics or Reef Fanatic depending on where in the country you are. When purchasing from any of our sponsors, please let them know that you saw their banner on Reefs.org.
