is this a Trumpet coral? pic

It looks like a goniopora sp. to me, but I dont know if trumpet is a common name for them or not, I've always seen them called flowerpot corals.

Trumpet coral typically refers to the coral caulastrea, also called candy-cane coral in many LFS.

Man, I've had nothing but success with my Alveopora !! Below are before and after pics... My clowns live in it btw... I have crazy amounts of tissue growth !! It's actually bigger now then when I took that picture. I'll try to get you a new pic when lights are on tomm... I never thought It would get crowded where I put it, but it did... I've had it over 2 years now... Never had a problem with it... Good Luck !

every thing I see on the internet about them are hard to keep
Do you think he will be ok in my tank 3gal 13watts?
Would it be better to place him at the top or bottom?

Somebody might have great success with a species, but if you are relatively new to reefing I think you will have a better experience if you restrict yourself to stuff thats bulletproof, rather than known to be tricky...

now that I have it is 13watts going to keep it alive I like to do what I can to keep it, its only a 3gal

The outlook for the coral is not too good since your tank is so small. Try to see if you can bring the coral back to the LFS for credit, and if not, just take this as a learning experience... Good luck. BTW, your live rocks look great.

I think it's a Red Open Brain (Trachyphyllia geoffroyi).... Not sure though.... colors are much brighter (bad pic).... really nice piece IMO...
