Hey I was just wondering if anybody has experimented with UV on corals. They have now came out with UV LED. I wonder if there could be any benefits. Heck the sun puts out a ton. I know you can't give it too much but will a small amount help? Should improve colors huh?

Actually, you run a greater risk of burning them by adding UV. Also depends on the spectrum.

Try searching our library http://www.reefs.org/library , as well as the database of Advanced Aquarist, and http://www.wetwebmedia.com for more information on lighting requirements for photosynthetic reef denizens than you can shake a stick at. They do require certain peaks/color temperature/lumens, but UV ain't one of 'em.

Seamaiden, Thanks for the info. I do realize that to much UV will cause corals to burn but UV is what makes them flouresce (sp) isnt it.

Well, I've never actually put any under any kind of UV/black lighting. However, actinics, putting out a wavelength of 420nm, achieve a very close approximation of fluorescing (sp?). Glad the information was helpful, sorry it didn't quite answer your question, though.
