Im gonna take anothe pic tommorow, the percs have both gotten a little darker in the orange area since this pic was taken, thats another reason I'm not sure... I thought that only happened to true percs...
I don't remember which is which, but you need to count the spines on the dorsal fin. One has more than the other. Other than that, they can look identical.
I've read the same thing about the dorsal spines, but counting them is a lot harder than it sounds. And both species can vary among individuals as far as how much dark pigment in the orange parts. I think the most reliable visual test is the width of the black bands. In ocellaris, like the ones in the photos, the band is a clean thin black line. It percs it can be wider and more uneven.
I believe those are ocellaris. Why you ask? Were they sold to you as percula? The only true way to tell which is which is previously mentioned counting number of dorsal spines. I think 9 for perc, and 11 for ocellaris.......I think.
Yeah, they were sold to me as true percs, quite a while back... I'm going to have to take pics of those guys to count the spines... Keep ya posted ! Thanks
Most people wrongly identifie the common occeloris clown as a true perc, but i'm afaid its far from the truth. A true percs black edging around the largest white band is a lot more pronounced, unlike the common clown , where it is just an outline. Plus the true perc is mostly slightly darker.
It's funny you ask. I was checking out your website just the other day and it struck me that they looked more like ocellaris than true percs. I guess that tells you what my best guess is. Is it really possible that the LFS made a mistake ?!!!!
