The truly evil people like to inject them with Kalkwasser, as supersaturated as they can get it, too. (Just keep adding and stirring til no more dissolves--I'm assuming you know that, but plenty of other folks don't.) Much like putting salt on garden snails, methinks...magnifying lenses to fry ants, and so on and so forth...

Dr. Ron says
Hi,

It actually looks like neither of the options you have suggested to me, but I really can't give you a name for it. The tentacle shape and coloration is really not a match for either Aiptasia or Bartholomea.

Technically, anemone identification is done by removing the animal and examining internal and cellular structure. This is then matched with an external anatomy. The problem lies in the fact that there are a lot of species of small, tan to brown, anemones; probably dozens of species in the Caribbean, more in the Indo-Pacific, and their taxonomy is poorly known.

We tend to focus on those that well known, such as Aiptaisia or the curly cue anemones, and the others either get ignored or mis-identified as one of the above.

So... I can't get there from here on that anemone; my suspicion is that it is probably harmless, but I also wouldn't place any bets on that.

so i will be keeping him!

Despite Dr. Ron's comments, I would recommend removing that anemone. IMO, it is a type of Aiptasia and will get to be a pest if left unchecked.

Oh...nevermind.

Reefnewbie, I'll suggest that you never rely on one source only for your collection of information.

Besides the library here--> http://www.reefs.org/library I'd like you to visit Bob Fenner's site at http://www.wetwebmedia.com and do some searching. You can even submit this question to "the crew".

Mr. Scheimer spot on, in my opinion.

reefNewbie,
Seems like you've already decided what you want to do. It does appear to be some type of Glass Anemone, which have that light brown color due to the endosymbiotic algae. Don't try to siphon it out or pull it off your rock. Any pieces that settle will just grow into more. They're relatively safe since that lack stinging cells, but are usually removed by those that find them unattractive. Some sources indicate that they thrive on poor tank conditions. :D If you do decide to remove it, you can inject it with 'Kalk' (quick and barbaric), or add a peppermint shrimp which will feed on it.
