Hey Reefland...

The turbelles were about $150 each and the controller was $200. I had a connection that was able to give me a break....

If I had to have powerheads it would be these or the stream pumps.. Maxijets are great. but these make them look like little fountain pumps. the controller can actually turn them down, speed them up. pulse them back and forthe between two set speeds and then control the time interval in which the ramp up and power down.... they are great...

so what is a good pump for a closed loop system?
with say 6' head?
hi.
Closed loop has no head per se. There are some nominal back pressure from friction of pipe and plumbing restriction, which is usually not seriously unless the designe is bad or unconventional.

I must be missing something. How can a closed loop have any less backpressure than a sump return? The only way I can see this is if the returns for the closed loop were above the surface of the water? Because if the return is below water level in each system, aren't you still trying to pump water "against" the volume of water in the tank that is above the return?

I don't want to hijack this thread, so I will pose this question in a new one. Look for "Need help from engineering type people".
