I have a tank raised percula clown. I have just recently got two 175 Mhs to go over my 60 gallon tank.

Which anemone would I have the best chance of the clown forming a symbiotic relationship?

Hi Panacea,

If you are refering to ocellaris clowns then their natural host would be Heteractis magnifica and Stichodactyla gigantea. If it is a true perc then
Heteractis magnifica or Stichodactyla mertensii. I would stay away from the H. magnifica (Ritteri anemone) though as their survival rate in captivity is dismal at best.

Hope that helps,

Brian

My ocellaris clowns love my long-tentacle anemone, and have been in it for 3.5 years.

Peace,

My fish is a true perc. Will it be harder to match him with an anemone because he was tank raised? Not gonna get rid of him for a wild caught fish, just curious.

Good question. There's a theory that clown larvae receive the chemical cue to find their eventual host while still in the egg (environmental stimulus to host). If this was entirely the case, the tank raised clowns who have never seen or been near an anemone shouldn't want to host in them. Since there are probably thousands of folks with tank raised clowns hosting in anemones, there must be some genetic predisposition to host in certain anemones; the cause is not entirely environmental.

Long story short, go for it.
