hi.
Getting into this hobby is the dumbest thing I ever did

Seriously, I removed the access screw to my Remova skimmer, and after getting distracted, decided to turn on the pump without the skimmer cup on. Well, the water shoot all the way to the ceiling, and my wife wonder why our roof get a leak even on a sunny day....

ROTFLMPAO!!!! LOULE!!! You are one funny guy, Mr. Pea.

Stupidest? thing? Just one?

I guess it would have to be assuming that the tiny little $30 tap water filter that I had originally bought would last me for the first year or so that I had my tank, without ever changing the cartridge. In retrospect, it's useful life was probably over as soon as I filled up my 75 gallon tank the first time. It's easy to look back and see that the more I changed my water, the worse my tank got. Philly water is just terrible. My tank was half decent in the very beginning, with a few pieces of live rock I got from a friend, but over time all of the diversity just died out. I only ever bought a few tiny frags to try and they eventually bit it too. It was so discouraging. The fish were fine though. So, if you are just starting out:

Buy an RODI unit before you fill your tank up.

The RODI is probably the most high tech piece of equipment I'm still using. The tank is running great with no skimmer at all and only VHO lights so far. My home made refugium and surge device are pretty low tech and cheap.

Hey sm :) What's the P stand for in ROFL...?

Stupidest thing I ever did was putting a 20 gal high in the cabinet under my 55 for a sump. I can't get it out without taking the 55 down and removing the top. So, if I get a leak I am SOL

dumbest thing i have ever done is sadly a very recent thing. I had to break down my 75 due to some housing issues and tried to keep everything going out of rubbermaid tubs. was working very well. but i missed my tank so i got a 26 bow to set up at my new place. I had to drill a hole in the stand lastnight and stole the extension cord to power the drill. would have been so F'n nice if i had remembered to plug the "tanks" back in. got home from work today and it was ugly. I am depressed. everything was doing so well until i broke it down. a patch of xenia probably ten inches round just melted. taking out all sorts of well......everything.

as for new person advice i second the RODI system comments stated earlyer. RO is the single best thing you could ever do.

ONE of the stupidest things I have done as an "expert" newbie was to add 4 lovely cleaner shrimp to my tank. The lunare wrasse ate them completely within 5 minutes.

ANOTHER stupid trick was when my tank was new I put a sponge into the overflow box to clear up some suspended solids. Then forgot about it and went out for the evening. Upon our very late (or early) return the tank was overflowing because the sponge clogged. Tank full of mostly RO water. I learned the hard way that 50 gallons is alot of water. Thankfully this was before fish etc. LR turned out fine. Ever tried emergency tank maintenance at 4:00 in the morning? Brutal.

The stupidest thing I have done... so far... as I am really a noob, ask anyone.

Was not listen to skeldang when I got the tank and he told me, "Spend all the money you would be spending on livestock right now on the following three things: sump, RO unit, skimmer."

What did I do? Lessee... *grabs her very short expense sheet cause she did listen to skel when he said to stop keeping one* 6$ for green chromis... a whole lot of money on snails 12$ ish a week for the last eight weeks... lawnmower blenny... 32$ clowns... emerald mithrax crab... and...

I'm paying for it with a huge cyano bloom, hair algae, bubble algae... diatoms out the wahzoo... (I am grateful the lawnmower blenny seems to love this stuff!) and... generally kicking myself over it.

I may never get all of this crud out of my tank.... but I'm learning!

1st lesson in Reefkeeping: When you find people who have been doing this longer than you, and you know they are giving you good advice... LISTEN TO IT!

I used a kitchen sponge to clean the algae off the glass on the inside. Little did I know they were antibacterial.
8O 8O Shyte, that's a good safety tip! I never would have thought of that!

Well...I started with a 20 gal (which was a mistake in the first place...) and had only cleanup crew, anemone (don't remember what kind, long time ago), and a clown. I was doing a study for a class. Right, so, you know how maxijet powerheads like to fall down? Well, unfortunately, the anemone broke it's fall. So.....MESSY! I was picking anemone flesh out of the motor for about two hours. Hehe, poor guy. So, now I keep my powerheads in strategic locations.

More recently, 6 months ago, I added a second tang to my 75 gal that had a yellow tang already, some chromis, clowns, algae blenny, etc. I knew they may fight, but I had a horrible algae problem and wanted more eaten. So, they fought. The new one died in less than a day, and the yellow was stressed into ich. And I mean, ICH, like a completely white formerly yellow fish!!! 8O So, not wanting to kill my inverts with meds, I lowered the salinity to kill the ich. That worked, and everything was fine, but THEN it stressed my clowns into getting clownfish disease, and they all died. I'd always rather lose fish than dose my main tank, but it sure was a bad idea to add another tang. Oh well.

By the way, this is a great place to hear really funny stories. And to learn. Yeah, we're here to learn, right, I remember now.
It's always a while until we can laugh about these things!!!

I would have to say that when I built my first hood, I built it very tight to the tank. So I fire up my brand new 250w MH (two) and my VHO (four) and sit back and enjoy the new lights.

SO there I am, admiring my new lights for a couple of hours and the fsh are acting funny....so I think, "they must be hungry". Open the lid on the canopy, and get a blast of really hot air. Happen to look on the side of the tank where the thermometer was, and noticed that the water temp went from 77.5 to 84 in about an hour and a half (on a 135g tank)!

Lesson learned? Cut holes in back of canopy, or even better have an open-backed one....and lots of fan/air movement....
