Due to the fact that I can only afford to have a certain number of rooms in my home, the aquarium and the home theater are forced to exist in the same room. This presents a couple of problems, one of them being that my Ampmaster 3000 raises the noise level in my theater room substantially.
More important, though, I've got a big subwoofer. Big. 20"x20"x48". Doesn't sound too big, but it's pretty substantial. There are very few places you can make something like this "blend in." The only convenient solution is to put it in the corner and put my tank diagonally across the corner, which makes it completely disappear. NEAT!
But I'm worried about fish. I've only got one fish, a dusky jawfish, in my reef right now (recent move and haven't restocked yet). He seems unfazed by anything, and impossible to kill as well, so I don't think his opinion of the bass is the most reliable.
This subwoofer moves a LOT of air. In the garage, on the other end of the house, if someone is listening to music or watching a movie, you can put your hand on any wall and feel a STRONG vibration. It's basically capable of loading every room in the house with more than enough bass for general listening.
Part of me says, hey, the pump makes plenty of vibration, fish live with boats and enormous ships passing overhead producing lots of noise, etc. But I know fish can sense vibration very well, and I worry that this could be a major stress inducer if I add any more fish to the tank. I did a search and didn't find much info, so I'm wondering if anyone can help me make a decision. Moving the subwoofer won't eliminate the noise, but it will definitely cut down on the volume that reaches the tank. I'm just not sure if I should be worried about it at all.
