Lets have a vote from anyone with an opinion on your favorite tangs...

Myself, I'm partial to Achilles (Acanthurus achilles).

I don't mean to rain on your poll, but two of the most popular tangs are the yellow tang (Zebrasoma flavescens) and the hepatus tang (Paracanthurus hepatus). Neither are listed as choices in the poll. The powder blue tang (Acanthurus leucosternon) is also very popular and it's not listed either.

Also, are you referring to "favorite" for utilitarian purposes or simply "favorite" for its beauty, enjoyment, or all of the above? For example, two of my "favorites" are the achilles tang and the clown tang, but I wouldn't put either one in my aquarium. Same with the Vlamingi tang, which also isn't listed. :)

Yeah, I ran out of slots for the other tangs, but wasn't aiming for the most popular so much as the most unique (although maybe they are the same?). I do think you are right about the yellow tangs though...

For those reading the poll who want to vote on the 'other' category, please list down here in reply what that other is...

Good idea Wade.

Greg, the poll only lets you put in a certain amount of choices - so we have to work w/in the constraints of the software.

Cheers

I voted for the Atlantic Blue tangs. They are very beautiful. I see them schooling when I dive off Key Largo.

I hardly ever see them in marine aquariums. I bought a 2" juvenile about 6 month. It disappeared one night outta the blue. He was eating well, so i don't know what happened to him. I have been hoping to get another but have not found any offered for sell at any of my local LFS's.

I voted for the Achilles. I don't have one and don't know if I ever will since I already own two HUGE tangs, but they sure are purty.

I voted Sohal - in a large tank a healthy one is just amazing to see. I will always like regals too just for their demeanor.

I Vote purple, but alas, with 55 gal minus sand and rock I think I have not the room for any kind of tang, such a shame as they are beautiful

kole tang cleans the glass and rocks; not agressive, suitable for small tanks (75 gallons), personality plus, easy to keep if healthy when bought, cyanide free as they come from Hawaii.

Don't know why the clown and achilles are on this list. Nice fish but almost impossilbe to keep even for experts.

I've had an achilles for two years now...not impossible. Does this mean I'm now an expert? Woohoo, finally I've got proof! Can I have some sort of diploma or something?

FWIW, the comment I made regarding the achilles tang was not related to difficulties in keeping one in captivity. I had an achilles tang in my 500 gallon reef aquarium and had to remove it. In addition to picking on Tridacnid clams, it picked on just about every other large fish in the aquarium. They're a nasty fish and get nastier as they get larger.

Not only is my Sohal my favorite tang, it's my favorite fish. Although as not brighltly coloured as others, he is very elegant with his chocolate brown and yellow. Also very fat and happy.

I got mine from Mike King, and added it at the same time I added several other tangs. Because I added several, the none of them became super-dominant, and instead, they all became competitive at grazing. If one starts eating anywhere in the tank, the others all rush over to chew on the same rock. The Desjardinii is now the largest, and runs the tank, but there is no real aggression. The Achilles has never been aggressive at all. At this point, it's about 5-6". It, as well as all the tangs in the tank, will eat out my hand.

I had an issue with it at first, in that it paced alot. It got moved into the growout system, but when I set up the new tank, all of the tangs went in together.

It has never shown any interest in the tridacnids, of which there are 4 in the tank, including two tiny maximas recently added.

Perhaps blanket statements about them are bad, since you've had bad experiences, yet I've had quite the opposite. To say they all get nasty based on your experience is a disservice.
