Tell me about Free Base (Rock, I mean)....

A friend of mine is looking to get the cheapest live rock available by buying dead rock and sticking it in the sump of a large reef tank for a couple months to seed it. So where is the best place to buy rock suitable for a reef tank that will become live? It would be nice to not have to ship, is there any local place (Home Depot?, etc..) that sells something appropriate?

I heard hawaii base rock is really good. Couple of my friends bought it and they really like the quality. I'm really recommend this to you. $50 for 50lbs.

Tufa rock works. it's very porous and tan in color. You usually see it as a carved product in LFS going for too much money, but uncarved pieces I've seen for $1.99 a pound.
