Danm, I agree that the original question was posed as a "what if"? Many of the responses were : get this, try this, these would be good, etc... I think that any newbie reading only this thread might have come away with the impression that cycling tanks with fish is acceptable, and in IMO,with what we know today, it isn't. The only two reasons to possibly ask this question is 1) the guy doesn't give a rat's ass about fish or 2)to be a troll, or both.

Bangbang, if I was going to "invent" a fish tank it would be a lot bigger than 72 gallons, that's for sure. 8) I haven't lost a fish in two years... how about you? Just curious what in the post you quoted makes you think I don't have a tank. When I read some posts I often wonder how anyone with fish can have so little regard for there well-being.

I used mollies to cycle my tank. Not that I felt that I needed to cycle my tank with fish, but the indians were getting restless staring at a big empty tank for weeks. So I added 4 or 5 mollies that I acclimatized first. 4 or 5 mollies in, 9 or 10 mollies out. Yep, they even bred! Easy to get mollies out as they tend to hang around the surface.

Whatever, do not cycle your tank with damsels as they are nearly impossible to remove. Looks like alot of guys want to get rid of them as they become nasty little buggers. Recent posts here will attest to that.

Also...
There are millions of guppies, goldfish and whatnot sold to people every day that won't last 2 weeks because of lack of commitment, neglect and loss of interest. These are the "hobbyists" you should direct your viewpoint toward.

Yep....I experienced the Damsel Thing...almost killed them all gettin them out of the tank. Thats why I am thinkin about usin one of my chosen "keepers" to cycle my tank. I was thinkin about usin a Volitan Lion or even my Snowflake Eeel. However the Mollies would work and later become food. How did you acclimate your Mollies. How many did you use per gallon?

BnagBnag ( )
I dripped in saltwater until full strength over 8 hours. 4 or 5 mollies per 140 gal. Just enough to give my guppies (kids) something to gawk at in a lifeless cycling tank. If kids happy, wife happy. Wife happy, more fish. 8)

More fish, you happy.

Notice no one ever remembers the man of the house in the "whos happy" circle. Its like ok kids happy, women happy, who cares about the guy?

Anyway, its good to be consciountious about the fish we choose to care for, but if they are rapid breeding-short life span type of species it really doesnt do any harm to "risk" a few. If they are slow breeding- long life span type then one could argue that none should even be available for the aquarium industry in the first place...

Now where is a cow? Ive got an urge go "tip" my dinner.

You just gave me an idea. I could place the Mollies in my New Tank and run all my equipment while adding my salt slowly over 24 hours time..until I reach the proper salinity.

Well my wife is givin me crap about the new tank. I broke ther news to her today. She wants my current tank out of the dining area and moved to MY ROOM. Cool! now I have an excuse to set another tank up under the New Tank. LOL I have to redo my entire project now. I may use the 85 as a Reef Tank now with the current fish that are in my 29 gallon. That way I can use my liverock and some live sand from my tank. I am really havin trouble deciding now. What fun! She complains about the "noise". She is the one that makes Noise. Christ there she goes sounding off now. Yep............seems like we have to take the end of the line when it comes to handin out the happiness stuff.

Before I set up a saltwater tank, I had my wife make the decision as to whether my next tank set up would be another cichlid tank or a saltwater. After warning her about the triple expense etc. but all the pretty fish and corals we could have, SHE decided we should try saltwater. Now when the bills come in she can't gripe too much as I tell her "honey, I told you so..."
