I have a turbo that seems to have bit the dust. If I leave him in there I am sure he will be consumed rather quickly leaving behind the shell to be inhabited by future critters but I dont want to foul anything up.

Any drawbacks to just leaving it in there?

I'd leave him there unless you have a really small tank. His shell will be a memorial.

Smelling it will leave no doubt as to whether it is alive or not. If it is for sure dead I would personally take it out (I wouldn't let anything decay in my tank on purpose) and let it sit for a while. You cpould throw it back in later if you want.

IMHO, TAKE IT OUT. Decaying stuff can lead to algae problems....it's happened to me before (with snails). Learn from my mistake and take it out. There's really no reason to leave it in, anyway. My 2 cents....

Hi Mooner, if you have Hermit Crabs leave it. I have some blue and red leged and when something die on the tank like fish, snails ect. they do what they have to do. Maybe they fight for that turbo conch  Ralphyhp.

I agree that leaving it in there won't hurt anything. Just think of all the critters (starfish, snails, crabs, worms, etc.) that die without us ever knowing! If you have plenty of worms and crabs, they will eat it in no time. Or, if you want the shell and not the decay, take it out, put it in freshwater, and wait. The shell will still be there, but not the nasty part.

I would leave him there as well...my guess is that he's already been eaten.

How big is the tank?

I would leave it in there unless the tank is smaller than 29g

It's a 44 with a 10 gallon sump. I left it in there for the last 4 days and my guess is that it is pretty much gone by now. I have a few of bristle worms that are coming or age and I bet they had a feast on it

Thanks all.

Hey, Mooner - I just looked at your reef cam. Cool setup! I was wondering how your cleaner wrasse is doing. I have one, and it's doing great, despite what all the books say about their poor survival rate. I'd be interested in hearing about someone else's experience. They say most of the problem is lack of food, once all the fish are cleaned. But mine actively goes after the brine shrimp and marine cuisine that I feed the other fish. He has been named Hoover for this reason.
How long have you had yours? Had mine for about a month, and he's already gotten a LOT bigger than he was. I'll try to get a pic of him for you, but he's a fast swimmer, as I'm sure you know. And picture require cleaning the tank walls...and who wants to do that?? 8O

Sara,

Thanks for the compliments and for taking the time and looking at the cam! It's kinda fun to have it set up so others can share my reef building experience. Come to think of it, I will move it today to focus on my tan/lime green polyps and the fish. This area of the tank is popular for the inhabitants to gather and feed. I will also try to get low enough to get the scarlet cleaner shrimp in there, too. He hangs out under the large live rock in that cave area from time to time.

As for the wrasse, I have had it about one month and so far it has been great. It cleans the tank, it loves mysis shrimp an it feeds heavily on pods that climb around the tank bottom. So far I have only seen one bit of strange behavior: It will bob it's tail up and down (looks like a sideways windshield wiper) in the water as soon as the lights go off for the night. Weird as can be but it does it every time.

I know that it is happy eating the food I provide so I can see nothing wrong yet with it as a valid portion of the reef environment.

Here is a pick of him and his tank buddy (a sissortail goby). These two are the initial inhabitants of the tank.

Take care and keep checking out the reef!

Here's a picture of Hoover. Not the greatest picture, but hey, I'm not a photographer! They see me come to the aquarium and think they're about to be fed, so that's why they're at the top. The other is one of my three ocellaris clowns. I have a great picture of all my fish in one place, but it's too big to put on here. Too bad, cause it's really cool. Ok, here he is.

This is what happened to my last dead snail. The shell is still there, I haven't pulled it out.

Mooner, only 4 bristle worms? Man, I have over 50. They are wonderful scavengers. And better yet, I didn't have to pay for them!

50!? Send a few my way, Sara!

Actually I have counted 4 but I could have more. They are all pretty small and have just ventured out of the live rock.

I need to get me one of those moon lights to see them run around at night.

Man, I have some that are at least an inch thick, and I don't know how long. You can never tell if it's the same worm or two ends of two worms. You seriously want some?? When I feed my pep. shrimp, they come out in swarms. I guess they sense the food in the water. It's amazing how fast they come out. I'll try to get a picture of one of the monsters in there for you. One of my pep. shrimp tried to eat one of the big ones once...those shrimp are feisty!! He gave up. I wouldn't eat something that spiney, that's for sure. Of course, maybe the shrimp are just dumb, because they also jump on my large long tentacle anemone and try to eat him. I don't think that's going to work, guys. I was rooting for the anemone to eat him!

It's amazing how these things can hide so well! I have not seen any in a few days but I bet I have a pretty good amount of them. I do want to get some scavengers going pretty strong so if I don't see a few more out and about (now I am gonna look) I might hit you up for some down the road.

I guess you could bait them and scoop em up or trap them?

Let's play it by ear but I just might take you up on it.

I'd really like to see some pics if you can get them.
