I was looking around and found this work light. It is a 500w white PC. Do you think it could be used instead of MH's?

Without knowing what it's Kelvin rating, lumens (I can barely see that rating..it's about 6,800?), and spectrum is, I couldn't offer a guess.

Check on the DIY forum here and on RC. There are dozens of threads about LoA lights and also some with specific information on the Fluorex bulbs. Just do a forum search under the DIY sections you'll find lots of specifics.

It has a kelvin rating of 65k they work well for sump lighting and such. I had one mounted in a canopy and it was much too yellow for my taste

Did you mean 6500K or just plain 65K?

I've kept some montipora frags under this light very close (about 6 ") and gotten growth. It's only been about a month or so in my refugium. I wouldn't plan on this substituting MH unless it's in a very tiny tank.
