Hi all. I was very excited when I captured this tonight. Sweepers are about 6-7 inches when fully extended. Firt time I have ever seen them this long. Just thought I would share my joy.
That's not what the rest of my corals think of those cute sweepers
Yeah I heard that. I have some capnella really close and also a brain really close to it. I will be moving them really really soon.

I know people who actually snip them as the grow out  It's very fascinating, but too bad they sting the beejeezus out of neighbors.

Galaxia takes the cake. I've seen (and this is literal) 2 feet long sweepers! I've seen some pretty long sweepers on some closed brain corals (e.g. Platygyra) and some hammers (Euphyllia) but nothing comes close to Galaxia IME.

Well, I have a closed brain and a Euphyllia (frogspwawn), but I've never seen any sweepers. I look at night for them too. Should I be worried? Haven't killed anything so far, so I guess it's ok. But in the future, I'll keep them apart.
Thanks, Len.

you should keep an eye on your galaxea because those sweepers are lethal weapons.
I have a galaxea and I have her on a rock in the sandbed away from other corals, just my firecoral is close :D but I don´t think any sweeper can match the millepora.
Great coral but deadly too.
Marco :D

I am not sure if it is true or not,but someone told me they usually send them sweepers out when they are hungry.Does anyone know if that's true?

I have never heard that before. But mine always seem to extend when I do a partial water change.

Higher flow seems to bring out the sweepers on mine. I originally had it in a lower flow area but it was looking a little under the weather - I moved it onto my sandbed closer to front of tank in the current from my Stream - propped coral up on a few small pieces of LR rubble so there is a small cave under it my watchman goby lives in. Coral is amazingly healthy now and I may have to frag it again but since moving to higher flow the sweepers are getting huge - I have a nice columnar turbinaria about 4 inches away I have seen it brush occasionally - colony is about 5" x 4" roughly - one other problem I have is getting it to grow laterally and flat instead of encrusting.

I read that you should keep it 2 inches away from all other corals. To be safe, I went 4. I haven't experienced the range of yours but nothing can be within 7 or 8 inches of mine. I learned that the hard way.

Does clipping the sweepers hurt the coral in any way. I merely 're-coralscaped' to avoid the problem. If I can clip WITHOUT HARM, I will do so. I don't want to punish an animal for doing what it normally does (however, I do grab both of my labs if their sniffers start to go for a guests crotch---I have my limits).

I target feed all of my corals fairly regularly. I'm not conviced that hungriness has an impact. Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't.

BTW (Anecdotal evidence alert!!!), when I added my 3rd maxijet recently, the damage seemed to get worse. MAYBE flow does have an impact.

My Galaxia is about 5-6 inches from an accropora, and even though I only see the sweepers extending out 3 or 4 inches, the nearest branches of the accro are toast.
