I have a mix of Tonga and Fiji live rock. It supposedly is the same rock the lfs uses in their display tanks. The difference is my live rock still look rather bland, while the lfs rock is this awesome purple color.

My question is are there additives that will be absorbed by rock which affect color? I currently don't dose with anything because it's a fish only tank.

Hi AngelMaster. Glad to see you here on reefs.org.

What you're seeing on the rock the shop has is coralline algae. If you have low calcium available, it won't grow, and if it was encrusted on the rock then it could recede (much like a hairline) without sufficient calcium.

Since you're fish-only, decide how important it is to you to have the coralline, and go on from there.

SM said it right, you need some calcium added to your tanks diet man; since fish do not get harmed by calcium I would say to get yourself some of KENT Marine's Turbo-Calcium. That is what I use right now while I wait for my Calcium Reactor and Kalkwasser Reactor to get here. Unlike me, you won't need to add the kalkwasser as well since you only take care of fish; but like most people [including me], they read up and see pictures of nice to great looking reef setups and eventually have a change of heart and jump into the reef side of things and leave just fish in the past. Fish only tanks are great for people that want to take care of sharks, rays, or triggers, but if you have some cute and cuddly fishies swiming around [and could affort to get into reef], then jump in the water, I can assure you you won't be disappointed. Just my 2 Cents.
