Was wondering - has anyone used the method outlined by BReefCase in the archive thread ( http://reefs.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=13770ad ) ? Specifically the addition of vinegar to the Kalk mix in order to drive the chemistry to our benefit? I have been doing this off and on for about a year with no "bad" effects I can detect - only a slight but definite Acetate odor to the skimmer product after a period of heavy dosing. Over the past couple of years have clams ranging from ~ 8" to 6" growth - so some seem to like something - don't have the ability to do a controlled test of one tank adding and one not.

Many people do it, and there is several study by Craig Bingman on it in various article on the web. Do a search on RDO as well as AAOM and see if you can find the specific articles.

Breefcase is my idol ;) I used to dose kalk the way he recommends until I got my kalkreactor. Never had a problem myself.

Just seems strange there is not more published or you don't much about the practice. No one locally, that I have talked to, have heard of the concept and most are sceptial until I show them what my results.

Anyhow, thanks for your answers.

Oh, also, Len - I have a reactor on order but have heard that I should continue with the Kalk drips as the reactor will maintain the DKH while the Kalk is more for the Ca+. Just have to watch the PH close. Right, wrong???

I also add vinegar to my kalk. I can't really say if it's helping, but it's definitely not hindering. I was convinced to add it after reading BReefcases scientific explanation. Anyone who doses kalk should read it.
