Hello all,

I have a parasite problem in my Reef tank. I have fish such as tangs, gobies, and clowns. My Tangs have come down with a parasite infection that looks like ICK. My LFS recommended Chem-Marin
"Stop Parasites" to rid the Reef tank of this problem. I would like to know if anyone has used this product in a Reef Environment. I have many corals and do not want to loose them by adding a medication that might do it harm. Any help is greatly apprietiated.

Tangs are notorious for parasites. I would suggest getting him out of the tank and putting him in a quarantine. Use hypo salinity and feed food enriched with garlic. You might wanna invest in some cleaner shrimp and a neon goby or two to help out with small out breaks. This should help but I dont know of any effective ich treatments for animals in a reef enviroment. Garlic helps

Kevin,

I would not add any medications to a reef tank. Some use copper which is not reef safe, and some say they are reef safe but they are so dialed down that they are usless. Can you remove the fish into a seperate aquarium for treatment? Some people believe in Garlic to remedy Ick, but I myself have had no luck with garlic. If you can not remove the fish from the main tank into a hospital tank, another thing you can due is just let it go on its own path. If the fish is eating well, it most likely will overcome the Ick and be fine. But regardless, you need to find out the cause of the Ick. Did you hospital your fish for 30 days before putting them in the main tank? Are there other fish picking on this one fish? How is your water quality? Ick is usually a effect from a fish being stressed. Remedy the stress part, hosp new fish for atleast 30 days, and Ick should never be a problem for you again.I am sure more people will respond to your post.

Thanks for the reply mountainbiker619,

To answer your questions

No I do not have a hospital tank.

I am feed garlic soaked food.

The fish is a Achilles Tang and it is feeding fine. It just gets picked on a lot.

Which is why I belive it has ICK. My onher two tangs have slight ick problems but seem to overcome them. Could it be that I just added about 20 lbs. of cured LR and this has stressed him?

being picked on does stress out fish quite alot. Normaly when fish over come ich the build an immunity to it and its harder for them to contract the parasite again. My yellow tang was fine when I intorduced a banner fish into the tank but, he did pick on the baner fish quite alot and before long the banner fish was covered in ich and everyone else in the tank was fine. So if he survives this outbreak chances are he is going to be around for a while. Like I said before though a cleaner shrimp and a neon goby or two will help a bit.
