Hi folks just recently bought some frags and I need to adhere them. What is the glue of choice? Also is there a commonly available (hardware store) glue that I can use?

Super glue gel. It is very important that you buy the gel. The regular kind is way too runny.

Are we talking the hardware store brand?

Yeah, any brand will do. I buy the generic kind my supermarket sells.

The chemical name for super glue is cyanoacrylate, so you can look for that word on the packaging if that makes you feel better. I was skeptical about putting it in the tank myself initially. Just make sure you get the super glue gel.

Hot glue from a hot glue gun works well too. The way to do it is to put the hot glue on the rock you're going to glue the frag to, then stick in the frag, and immediately quench it in the tank. It will harden instantly. Coralline also will quickly grow over the hot glue and cover it up.

I use the super glue gel myself. I was skeptical, but then I read that it was ok to use in Eric Borneman's book. I figure if it is good enough for him. I haven't had any trouble so far. Your other choice is to go with a two part underwater epoxy. I would by that from an online pet supplier, because some of the ones you find at the hardware store might not be reef kosher.

Its great to know I have a choice. When you think what my LFS is asking for the coral epoxy. I dont want to seem cheap, but it seems a lot of folks have gone this rout. How long have people been using the hardware super glue is this a new idea?

I have been using it for several years. I find it works best of course for stony coral frags, and things like zoanthids.

I think people have been using it for a long time. I know I read about people using it long before I ever tried it.

I assume I would be taking the frag out of the water placing the glue on the frag and pressing the frag on the site that I want aplying a bit of pressur almost as if it were the marine epoxy?

If doing it out of the water, I usually put a small blob of glue on the rock, a small blob on the frag, and push them together, holding for just a few seconds. Be careful the glue does not squish out on your finger and get the whole mess stuck to you LOL!

Gently placing the newly glued frag in the tanks helps the glue set very fast, the water cures it quick!

I also use it right in the tank if I want to glue a frag to a large rock or to the overflow. You have to work faster because the water makes the super glue set very fast. Sometimes it takes a few tries before I get it right because it is harder to see what you are doing when working right in the tank.

I usually glue the frag to a piece of rock outside the tank. Thatway I can let it lean on the tank stand for a minute or two to harden- I find that trying to hold the frag to the rock is tricky; maybe I'm shaky.

Well then I will head out to HD maniana and give it a go. Funny thing though I’m telling my friend about this super glue gel and he seems skeptical. I figure the guys here on the board are always inovative; hopefully I can plant the seed in him.
