I'm not a big flake feeder, but I bought some Ocean Nutrition Prime Reef Flake food yesterday and curious how much better it is over other brands. I only feed flake about 2-3 times a month because I like frozen food or live food. Is there really a big difference in a generic flake and the Prime Reef that states it's low in ash and phosphates?

Tank Info: 45 Gallon Reef, Nitrites/Nitrates 0, Ammonia 0, PH 8.4, Alk 14, Ca 480, plus misc supplements. Water change every two weeks. 1 Gallon RO/DI added daily due to evaporation from fan for cooling (77 deg).

I feed it from time to time.

My fish like it, and they seem healthy. Haven't ever noticed a decline in water quality because of it.

I like to feed the flake from companys that specialize in marine fish, because I assume they are higher quality, but I could be wrong.

Anyway, I like Prime reef flake.

There is significant differences between flake food formulas in terms of "pollutants," nutritional value, and fishes' acceptance of the food. I can't really say if Prime Reef is more nutritious or less pollutant although it claims this, but it's one of the few flakes some of my fish will eat. So basically, what I'm saying is there are differences from one flake food to the next, but I can't say with any certainty that Prime Reef makes the better flake food. From experience, however, I like the product.

Hey Laura, you're at 1000 posts :)

I don't really think name brand flake is significantly superior to the generic flakes. I still feed name brand flake (Prime Reef included) to my fish. It served my ego well..........

As long as you are feeding them varieties of other food, you should be fine.

BTW, I don't really read the nutritional content on the label either. I don't believe what they put on that piece of label.

I feed mostly frozen foods. Mysis shrimp,Brine shrimp, squid, krill,
lifeline herbivore, sometimes dried "Ocean Nutriton" seaweed selects.
Right now I have 1 purple tang, 1 blue hippo tang, 4 blue chromis, 1 pair
of purple firefish, 1 pair of false purcula clowns. Oh, BTW, I also use
selcon. I feel it helps with fatty acids as some gets lost by freezing
foods.
