I am looking for a new inhabitant. In my 105 with a 4" DSB. Right now I have a 3.5" Regal Angel, 2" African Flameback Dwarf Angel, and a 2.5" Blue Throat Trigger. I have 110 lbs. of live rock, feather dusters, 2 blood shrimp, Scott Michaels Pistol Shrimp, and assorted mushrooms in my tank presently.

I can purchase a Blue Spotted Jawfish for $69, or a Juv. Chevron Tang for $79. Which fish would you choose? Any input would appreciated.

Do a search, we just had some discussion last week on the jawfish. They are a fave of mine, altho I still haven't decided if the burrowing etc will be too troublesome....

IMO...given the other fish in your tank I would not go with a jaw-fish. They tend to be very timid for the most part and you may never see him with all the activity in your tank.

I'm keeping a dusky jawfish ALONE in a 60g reef and I only see him when I put food in the tank. They are not the most visible fish. If you decide you want a jawfish there's no real sense in buying an expensive bluespot since you're only going to see their eyes anyway. Get a dusky or pearly for a fraction the price (i still think duskys have the coolest eyes for some reason)... the interesting thing about jawfish is their personality anyway.

i've heard some people say that the reason some jawfish are so reclusive is because they are not happy in their tanks. they prefer a large open sandy area where they have a 360 range of view. if there are any fast moving or aggressive fish in the same tank they are also more likely to hide. if you really want to get what you paid for, they should be kept in a species tank. i've seen photos of individuals who exist their burrows and actively patrol the tank.

You didn't mention what your subrate is. This would be the most important aspect of keeping a blue spot jawfish. They need 5" or so of fine sand plus some extra rubble around to shore up their cave.

Really a great fish. It will also double as a member of your cleanup crew. They are GREAT algae eaters.
