Blue Regals poisonous?

Justed read something that had intrigued me. Apparently according to a marine fishes guide they are a poisonous/venomous fish. I've never heard this before. Is it true? and if so How much care should I give mine?

Dunno, but I got hit by one's razor on its tail fin today.. just a tiny cut,... and man did it hurt for about an hour. Throbbed and was swollen for a bit. After that the pain soon went away, and no longer swollen.

when i bought my regal blue tang, i was told that if he ever got me with his little blades that the poison wouldnt kill me, but i would want to die. that always made me really hesitant about getting anywhere near him. but i think his poison is far less severe than that, but then just the other day i heard that the achilles tang has a pretty potent venom. has anyone heard about that?
or....experienced it?
regardless, my blue tang has become a savage. he attacks things now with his scalpels such as my anemone feeding tongs, and large pieces of shrimp he pulverized with them. and just this morning he decided it would be really cute to destroy my floating thermometer. hes a madman, i swear.

The dorsal spines of Paracanthurus hepatus are venomous, and I would think that the first few anal spines are also. I have handled quite a few of these fish in the past and have been stuck by blue tang on a few occasions. It doesnt hurt as bad as a Volitan sp. lionfish, but feels more like a small coral catfish sting, painful but bearable. Running your hand under the hottest water you can stand for 15 minutes will help whenever you are stung by a venomous fish. Use caution when netting these fish.

i've been cut by many a baby (2.5") hippo tang - hurts for about 2 days-quite a nasty little sting, too-that's how i initially found out about the mild venom they have :wink:

I never knew that either, and I own one! So the list of venomous fish is:
Scorpionfish
Foxface
Catfish
Some (?) Tangs
What else?

I've been stung by baby regal blues and XL vlamingi tangs. I think the first few spines of naso tangs are venomous but maybe I am not as reactive to the sting of tangs. The sting feels to me more like bee stings that are shortly painful to at most irritating.

Venomous? Where are you reading such information?

Im not reading this information anywhere, but rather providing first hand experience from acclimating and netting this species hundreds of times.

Could just be the spines cut is so irritating that it feels toxic?

Anyway, I think all rabbit fish are venomous not just the foxface. And you left off lion fish.

There are others but I cant think right now. Certainly some puffers, and I think some file fish.

Just about any fish is either a biter, poision, toxic if eaten, or very good at hiding :wink:
