Will Bristle Worms Die In Freshwater ?

Hi All,
It's been awhile since I've been here, this site is still as good as it ever was :wink:

I am tearing down one of my tanks and am down to the substrate, what a chore. I am wondering for cleaning the substrate of any leftover debris and the remaining hiding bristle worms. Can I half fill the tank with freshwater and kill off the worms then siphon and scrub the tank and substrate after all worms are dead ? I wish to keep all of my substrate but want it clean for storage.

Any advice,tips or experience is very appreciated,

My guess is that would do it, if not you could add a little bleach in the 1st wash... but WHY?

I'd rather see you offer that live sand either for sale, given to a newbie... drop off at the LFS, anything.

The thought of all those little pods meeting their makers... oh how sad!

If you want clean sand for the next time you plan to use the tank, southdown is $5 for 50 #s good live sand is worth at LEAST $1 / #, more like $3/# at the LFS. You could sell at least some of it here for $1/# + shipping.

Ditto on finding a good home. WHat kind of substrate is it?

Personally I wouldn't clean the substrate until you were to use it again. It is far less work, IMO and the bacteria can remain active for some time and speed up your cycle when you set up your tank again.

I need seed Live Sand for the new tank I have running at work. The rock is cycled and I was going to go to the LFS and buy 5 to 10 #s. It sells at $2.50 (US)

Where in Canada are you? I'm wondering what the cost would be to send next day to Washington DC.

Well, I originally had 2 tanks,,,, one 80g which I am keeping, and the 70g that I am tearing down. I found myself losing interest due to not getting to the city LFS enough to keep me excited about things. I just added my first new fish to my 80g last week, and it has been a year since I added anything prior. I guess you could say I have a complete set up for sale. As for giving the sand away to any local folk,, I am the only insane hobbyist for 100 miles from here. It was the hardest decision I've had to make to downsize, but my children are getting older and more selfish,,taking more and more time away from the things I need to do. And to think all I had to do was to take those little pink pills every day,, dang ! I'm just kidding,,I love my kids 8O .
I think my sand was Carib Sea Aragonite,, it is almost 4 years cycled,, and I am in Amaranth, Manitoba. The closest real city is Winnipeg, Manitoba which is a 2 hour drive to the city outskirts,,,2 1/2 from home to my LFS. Ya thats like 5 hours just driving in a day to get something new for this hobby.
How would you ship something like wet sand ? In sandwich bags and maybe a glad 'tupperware' container ? Maybe I could call my LFS,,maybe they would trade something for it or something,, or should I sell as a complete kit ? What would one ask for a 70g, 3 cupboard stand, heaters, prizm skimmer, decor,sand,,probably a whole lot more as I scour my rubbermaid boxes,,,, thre is a pathetic canopy just with NO bulbs,, I am keeping my 4 VHO.
My gosh,,tearing down is more work than setting up !

Your post made me laugh, so thought I'd try to give you a chuckle.

It isn't going to work out between us. I'm sorry, I thought we had something, but that is how it is. Don't worry, some of the cost is in our distance, your distance to a FedEx location (I assumed a package pick up) and us/ca customes.

If you were going to ship live sand:
Remember those bags your fish from the LFS come in? You would want those, each would hold a good 10#s, I'd double bag them and leave a little water, but still wet, to keep down the weight, then all in one big garbage bag.

If you have a LFS (even 2 hrs away) there have to be other people in the area that would like your sand and other stuff. FOR SURE, call the LFS and see what they say before you go. Store credit is better than putting it in storage.

Check the for-sale form. Sell in parts for more total $, as a whole setup for less work, and to get rid of it all.

If the drive to the LFS is what is killing the joy for you, check out the on-line sellers. Many people even in big cities are turning to them for everything, not just dry goods.

Patti, I bet Jayson at saltwaterconnection.com will buy it off you. He's in either Winnipeg or Brandon, I forget. Otherwise check with someone on Canreef.com, there are a few Manitobans there. Don't kill it, whatever you do! Heck you might even find someone in Alberta or BC who wants it, 20lbs via Greyhound would be very cheap I expect. If you gave it away I bet a lot of us would be willing to pay the shipping. And in case you're wondering, I think LS is pretty resilient. I kept 40lbs of it in a tupperware container for five days without a heater and just enough water to cover it and it was just fine.

Yes, Jayson is in Winnipeg, I met him and his wife a couple years ago when I went to talk to him about sumps, drilling,etc. I wanted someone who wasn't working at a streotypical shop to talk to and he invited me to his home. I was very impressed with his experience,knowledge, logical and not rude explainations when I asked a question that seemed like a stupid one to me, but he never made me feel stupid. His systems were awesome, and the most healthy specimens you just don't see in pet stores,,, took my breath away.

Something else I am considering is donating it to my daughter and sons school. The only trouble is how do they keep up with supplies, stocking it, and lighting, etc. I'm wondering if there is a company who promotes the educational purpose who may assist with some of the supplies. I can donate all the supplies to set up a basic fish only saltwater tank, but to go reef, they would need the LR,, etc. I think all grades from K - 12 would learn so much about this ecosystem that they wouldn't ordinarily have a chance to otherwise, and there's no way I'm gonna organize a feild trip to my house 8O ,, hahaha.
Does anyone know of a company who might promote such a project if I supply the tank,stand, skimmer, heater, canister filter, and sand.
I might contact Hagen perhaps.

Patty, you should contact Rick Pruess. He's involved with a program to eduacate the youth via aquaria. You can get his contact info off of the Marine Aquarium Councils (MAC) website ( http://www.aquariumcouncil.org ). Hes a certified retail shop in Michigan. I believe today he's giving a speach at one of New Yorks aquariums on that very subject. He'll probably have many sudgestions for you.
