heading up north this weekend in search of new fish stores. Stores already visited, Fish 2000, Tongs, Jeffs..looking to hit Aquarium city and Tropical Illusion...any other places worth the gas?

Being an addict (not recovering) I've hit most, if not all, of the local and not so local fish stores in the LA area. I do a lot of business with Mike at Aquirium City which is like a candy store to me. He is the most responsible LFS owner I know. He has a huge selections of coral, if you're into SPS you have to stop by his store. Now to the worst, IMO avoid Aquatic Zoo (sorry to disagree seven), unless you need dwarf angels, dead live rock, firefish or Cardinal fish and don't mind paying double. Why do they insist on buying the same fish week after week. It was much better when Brett owned it. Fins is a nice store but the prices are a little high and the owners are a little on the freaky side, husband wife team. If you want to see something funny go to Fins with your kids. Fins N' Fangs smells like... well you know... but Larry, the owner is a great guy and will get you any fish at a great price if you're willing to wait till Thursday. Just try to time it so you can pick the fish up before they put them in thier tanks.. Jeffs is great and so are he's prices.

I live right by the Tropical Illusion store, and I wouldnt recommend it. For the past 6 months its been declining, they had a beautiful 4x4foot reef tank, they proceeded to stock it with about 20 tangs...just for holding/sale, there were already about 20 fish in there! big ones too... that reef was algae (cyano) laden to begin with, and "gasp" empty when I last saw it.

I would recommend in its stead, a new place called the ocean floor, out in goleta. They have the only salt water vending machine I have ever seen, a really cool idea IMO. They seem to be pretty knowledgable, and have a georgeous store. Just my opinion, I havent even bought anything there b4, just goin off what I see. Spoke with the owner, he seems cool. Still into bio balls though, take it as you will.

My 2 cents, not even worth that much maybe.

try Fins in Camarillo, no realtion to Fins and Fangs or TAT's I have known TAT for 10yrs. i wouldnt buy anyhing from him. he is marketing all the products he makes

Rio, Realux lighting, ViaAqua, and many others. TAT owns those companies and will not carry anyother products but his own..

anyway i will get off my soapbox
