I go to three stores to get my stuff, and if I want to now about a certing fish or something I have to do the research myself cause they dont know squat. Highly irritating.

I am pretty good with species names but we do have some very knowledgable stores here in town for saltwater (Aquatek is awesome - very knowledgable!) but none are substandard by any means. I have found that for everything I know I really don't know much and there is always more to learn!

I have seen some atrocious advice at some of the larger stores but I mostly just shop there out of curiousity - I once spent about an hour in a P*tco helping some guy who had gotten flat out rotten advice and was losing fish left and right - after giving him some good books to read, some husbandry advice and a few good websites I think he was signifigantly better off than talking to someone at the store who runs the fish department but doesn't even know what a hydrometer is.

This is really subjective though.. - I mean, MOST people's LFS's suck... But if your LFS happens to be a really kick-a$$ (dedicated) reef shop that knows what it's doing..... - Kinda tilts the poll a little...

I m DUM!

I never thought of myself as a know it all but I do drive at least 100 miles or 175 miles to shops before I feel like I get advice I can trust.

No, I don't know more than everybody at my lfs, just most of them. There are a couple guys that know as much or more than me that, up to this point I can rely on for advice. I usually phone first before I make the trek to make sure one of them is there. If they are not there, then I have learned I am wasting my time.

Considering the LFS in my town runs everything off of undergravel filtration and thinks NO's are the only way to keep coral? Yeah I think I know a thing or two more than they do in regards to husbandry.

The guy @ my local store should really stick with freshwater only. I mean he tries to do good and give good advice (he won't sell you alot of fish @ once). But the day he got his first SPS he had 3 acros and a digita(under about 40w) and I asked how much for the acros, he said " NO, those are all finger corals" I lost all faith.

I voted no, but I have a very good LFS. Maybe I should go hang out at the local Petco and see if I can get some interesting stories. 8)

My LFS is pretty cool. I know about as much as the guy who runs it; he knows more about some stuff and I know more about other stuff. But, he doesn't claim to know things he doesn't; so that's really nice. Also, he knows he's weak on the coral end of things, so he tends not to buy them. He'll get frags that folks give him from their tanks; but he doesn't usually buy any.

My only complaint is that he has no idea where his suppliers get their fish, how they're collected, etc. So, I use him for dry goods, and for odds and ends from the stuff-my-other-clients-brought-me tank, but I generally get my animals from online places which do tank-propogation. He's a nice guy and I like to support him, but we don't see eye to eye about researching where your animals are coming from.
