Here in Central NY, we are in a state of emergency. Major ice storm. Lines down everywhere. 100 year old trees snapping line twigs!
No heat, no water but the fish are OK.

I thought is was a waste buying a generator last year. It's about time I made a good choice! It was hard explaining to the wife that we need it for the fish!!

Oh, I came into work to get my Internet fix

Yeah, we dodged a bullet. Trees are down in surrounding areas but so far we are ok. They are predicting wind for tonight which might take some more down. My little Honda generator is great but the fact that is only runs for about 4 hours at a stretch limits it.

Every time we get freezing rain my mind flashes back to the ice storm of '98 (I sound like a senior citizen). No power for a week (some much longer). Luckily for me, that was 2 years before my first reef tank. Some pet stores here were accepting fish/corals and either keeping them for good or charging per day aquarium rentals on site, I have heard.

hi.
If it's almost running out of fuel, can you add gas to it? (I don't know.... never use one before...) Or it does not run more than 4 hours, period???

Caz,
Seems like things will only get worse. It is snowing here right now. We are expected to get 6-8". I dont think the generator will last much longer.

Robin: yes you can just add gas and let it go. Mine lasts for about 10 hours between fueling.

ice: I just checked and we should be back on Wednesday (weather permitting).

Oh, what I would do for a warm shower

Robin, Yeah, it just has a small gas tank. It makes it difficult because I can't really go to work or anything because of the short duration. I believe you can rig multiple gas tanks together like outboard motorboatists (?) do, but I haven't figured out how yet.

What happens when a generator runs out of gas? Is it very difficult to re-start? I ask because I wonder if hooking up to a PC UPS would help. Once the gen runs out of gas the UPS would kick in at least providing power for a heater and a powerhead. I had a UPS (until my wife decided to pour water on it) and it ran for several hours with a 250w heater and a MJ 1200 for surface agitation. Just a thought.

No, you just start it again. Hooking it up to a ups might help, I guess but it would have to be fairly expensive to run my return pump (big) and a heater or two. I actually also have an car powered inverter as a back-up, but it will just run a heater.

Hi,

do you guys use natural gas??? couldnt you have your honda generator re-rigged for propane... those things last forever..... 5gallons would cost u 6 bucks...

LA: Natural gas won't work on my unit but is is something to consider for the future. Thanks for the idea.

I do have the Generator running through a 1500 watt UPS to 'clean' the power before it goes to the tank. If the generator stops, the UPS will keep the pumps running for a few hours.

Power is now back up and everything (including my wife) are fine!

Now I have to go outside and shovel the snow

Thanks all.

You guys are missing the simplest fix. MOVE!! Water in its natural state is a liquid. If you live too far north to know this, moving is the best option.

Count yourselves lucky, folks. Some areas here in upstate NY aren't even scheduled to have crews on site until Saturday. There are crews from as far away as Missouri, Tennessee, and Maine working for Rochester Gas & Electric right now - I see trucks from all over on my daily commute.

Cazreef, have you gotten your power back yet? I just spoke with a friend that lives on West lake road and they got their power back Monday. Hope your take is ok.

Tell me one state that does not have a weather or natural disaster related power outage occasion.
