bio ball filtration actually bad????

I have recently heard of bio balls being a bad way to have. They produce nitrogen I have heard. Two people have told me so far and I may be believing them. ANyone else have any info that would help?

If you have live rock and live sand then you do not want to have bioballs. The help facilitate the build up of nitrates in your tank and compete with your live rock. In other words, get rid of them. BTW, when you remove them remove them slowly so you don't mess up your nitrogen cycle.

All you need for bio filtration is live rock, a sand bed, and patience. Live sand right away is nice, but live rock will seed it.

just wash your balls weekly, and wash them very well. you wont have a big problem.

this applies to testicles as well

Bio-balls are not as bad as folks make them out to be. They do not magically/mysteriously produce nitrogenous wastes, there has to be sufficient ammonia and decomposition in the first place, and nitrification MUST occur, no matter what.

ok I took them out we'll see what happens. I dont know if this is coincedence or not but since I have taken them out I have alot of critters poking out of my live rock that I havent seen before. Cool stuff
