I'm not exactly sure what you're referring to when you say "electormagnetic metering pumps". The two most commonly used metering pumps are either diaphram-type pumps (think Reef-Filler) or peristaltic-type pumps (think Litermeter). I went w/ a diaphram pump (Pulsa -- makers of the Reef-Filler) to dose in my kalkwasser/topoff water. You can see how I have it setup in the Equipment section of my webpage: http://www.liquidreef.com/

I can recommend that you *not* get the Vario 3 pump. It can't run the volume for top offs without getting too hot. In addition, if you damage or need to replace the pump tubes it is ~$50 for a new set of tubes. That is right 1/6th the cost of the pump.

I was so unhappy with mine, I returned it to Dr. Fosters. They were very gracious about it. When I spoke with Marine Depot, they said that they were considering discontinuing carrying the pump since they had had so many complaints.

anna- how much volume were you running on that? I have a liter-meter which I assume has similar technology. To replace a gallon or two a day it's only on for a few seconds at a time....

I loose 2.75 G per day. The unit can only be programmed for a set number of on's and offs. It gets about .6 L/hr max. If I ran it long enough to do the top offs it ran too hot. Also, I should have read the literature more carefully. It is a three channel but all three channels must run at the same time at the same dosing rate. Finally, the dosing rate is set by a small potentiometer, which, for small doses would be very difficult to get accurate.

The pump technology is the same but it depends on the tube diameters. This one is set to just one diameter. The commander has two sets which give you different ranges.

I just (5 minutes ago) installed the osmolator universal 3155 from Tunze for my top off water. What a great product! It installed right the first time, has many failsafes and had enough adaptors to mate onto any configuration of sump/tank. It worked right the first time I turned it on.

It comes with all of the parts, pump, sensors, controller, power supply etc.

Shane,

I think that you are talking about a similar pump to what I am looking at. Also, your webpage is highly informative. The DIY Kalk system is pretty much a mirror of what I am looking at setting up. The only change I am looking at, is that I was thinking of using a ph monitor to turn the dosing pump on and off rather than a timer. I am still up in the air. Thanks for the link.

FWIW I got that pump on Ebay for around $90 including shipping. It's been running for over 2 yrs now w/ no problems.
