Return plumbing

In 58 gallon tank I have the sump return on the opposite side of the tank aiming the water on the surface towards the overflow.

Now thinking about this since I have too much hair algae as well.

Should I aim the return down in the tank? Maybe creating better circulation to the sump where the skimmer and stuff is?

If I did this I would have to get a powerhead to aim at the surface.

Any ideas? What have you done?

I have 5 powerheads in the tank already for flow. I will be adding a closed loop one of these days once I find a fool proof plan for one.

Hair Algae actually prefers high flow. So, if thats your reasoning then I wouldn't do it.

But yes, I believe if you are concerned with flow in the main tank then point your return downward. You need circulation around your rocks to get the detritus moving around to get it out of there. If you have low flow in the tank then this may contribute to higher concentrations of nitrates and phosphates in turn causing algae blooms.

Hi, increase the flow.Point it lower, you may have dead zones, still water.
Move the water about,get another PH it will help in gas exchange, (CO2).
Cut back on feedings,are you using RO water for top ups??
When was the last time you replaced your lighting??Follow all of these and you will beat the hair algae monster.
