What is going on in my tank?
I woke up this morning and noticed I couldnt find my cleaner shrimps!t night I had a pair of them female had eggs and now they both seem to be missing. Also all of my soft corals and leathers look like they a melting, all water test came up fine what could be the problem? I have 260 watts over top of it 2 65 watt actinic and 2 65 watt 10000k. Another thing is it looks like I have somesort of nutrient outbreak. could this be? Bright orange and purple bubble like algae. I was planning on moving everything from this tank into the 90 but I dont know if I should. My guess is there is to much water movement for the LPS and mushrooms. The return pump is a mag drive 2400 teed of into 2 1 " returns(RR hole drilled out to 1" and 1" put on opposite side also overflow hole was drilled to 1.5")If any one could help me or give input it would be greatly appreciate it.

55 gal reef, LPS, mushroom dominate
30 gal fish only with DSB
10 gal nano- various type culerpia and snails
In the mists of a 90 gal RR SPS tank, 75 gal sump/wetdry/refugium
Any input would be great on the 90

Hi, sorry to hear about your tank.

Did you do any changes on the tank recently?
Any maintenance the day before the happening?
Could the temperature have jumped?
Any fumes from painting or pest control?
Did any pump burn out?
Any electricity in the water?
Dropped any metal items in the water?
Added iodine?
Power outtage?

hmm... so many things to consider...

What, actually, were your water tests, and what were the results?

best regards

All my water test came out perfectly
Ph:8.5
Ammonia: 0ppm
Nitrite:0.5ppm
Nitrate: 0 ppm
Calcium was a little low at 300

The last thing I added was Iodine which I add about 5ml every month. My sister came up and told me she dropped the fixture in the tank earlier that day. Could this be the problem. My LFS (reefstore.com) told me not to add anymore iodine as many hobbist dont need to put any additives in their tanks because its such a small replica. He has a 500 gal grow out tank and he adds nothing. I hope I get this all nailed out. Ive had the 90 up and running for about a week with all salt and minerals in it, when should I start moving corals into it, I have live rock in there now, and was told I should leave it in there for about 2 weeks before adding any other livestock. If any one couold help me fast that would be great.
Thanks 4wayreefer!!

If nitrite is detectable at all, this would explain everything. Shrimp, corals, fish, whatever, are all highly affected by ANY nitrite in the water.

I would be pretty sure myself that it was the fixture (light right?). It may well have released metals (and other things) into the water. If there was any power connected to it, a lot of copper (perhaps other metals as well) will have been released in the water by electrolysis (although I'm no chemist).

Water changes are always a good thing.

dont know about when to move corals into the 90, but I would personally consider taking them out of the water they are in now, if they still look bad.

what an unfortunate accident!

Well it turns out that I lost a lot of stuff, by the time I got home from work one polyp on the frogspawn had dropped off. Seven orange Ricordia yuma had peeled off, green bubble coral sucked back in, and all cleaners died. I got to save all the other crabs and snails, I put them in the 90 gal. My sally was pretty much a gonner so I took my luck and just threw it in. The fish, I acclimated over throughout the night and they all seem to be doing fine. I also took all of the live rock and scrubbed it in the bath tub. Then placed all of the LR in the 90. All of the live corals i tok and put in my nano, about 30 min after placing them in there I could see almost everything was trying to recover, frogspawn and candycane opened back up and mushy are all happy also. We'll see how everything is when I get home tonight. Still need ideas on the 90 gal,
I just order a Dual 250w 20000k MH retro kit from Sunlight Supply. They should be here next monday. I have about 100 lbs of LR in there now and it only fills about half the tank. Any futher ideas would be greatly appriciated.
Thanks for all help everybody.
