You don't ever have to replace the resin in a Kati-Ani unit unless you allow the resins to dry out. If they dry out they won't recharge and are useless. I get about 200-300 gallons between recharges, it varies seasonally. I have the number 2 size unit and use a DIY carbon prefilter made from an old Aquarium Pharmacueticals TWP.
