My tang stoped eating!!!

Hi.

My yellow tang that has been in my system for almost half year, stopped eating today and is always in a corner of the tank without doing nothing.

He doesn't have spots or velvet or nothing like that. The only thing that is not normal is his belly. A bit thin.

Sometimes he gets near the shrimp for a good cleaning but he his ignored by his tankmate.


All tank parameters are normal. All corals are doing great. There's only another fish in the tank, a melanopus clown that was introduced before the tang. They get along really well but the clown spends most of his time laying id his BTA.

The tank is 55 gal with 24 gal sump, red sea skimmer, 150w hqi 10000K, 44lbs of live rock, no sand yet, top off with kalkwasser and DI water.

So, what do you think this is? Do i have to treat him with medication? I'm not able to catch him, do you think he will survive?

If there are no external symptoms, there's a good chance the fish has an internal infection, most likely worms in the digestive tract.

Unfortunately, worms are hard to diagnose and just as hard to treat. There is really no set framework for what works and what doesn't, and the medication needed isn't commonly available. Some have suggested that by the time you ascertain a worm problem in fish, it's too late

Let's hope it's not it and is just stress.

Any fish bugging it? Any changes in the system (lights, water, etc.)?

Two days ago i added one small BTA, a lysmata amboinensis and three astrae snails.

I usualy quarantine fish but have never done it with shrimp, moluscs and invertebrates.

Maybe the litltle amount of water that was introduced with these new aditions carried some "nasty" stuff in it. What do you think?

Do you quarentine these animals?

you best bet is to get sum nori algea or any good saltwater algea sheets and place them on a clip in the tank...also soak the food you feed in zoe or selcon..this will help if there are any infections on the fish and will add to his color...


have you been doing any of the above advice already?

manklit, have you tried different foods. sometimes i can get my fish to eat a lot more if i give it something new. what are you feeding right now?

i cross my fingers for you and your fish. i hope it isnt worms.

It's eating again and very active too.

His belly is still swollen.

Glad to hear your yellow is doing better. For anyone else that happens along: while the debate of garlic's effectiveness in curing ich is debatable most will tell you that garlic is a very good appetite stimulant for fish.

Jungle makes a medicated food to eradicate internal parasites, it's called pepso food. I don't know if you can get it in Europe, but it's worth a shot. Try some Tetra Oomed flake as well, I hear it's still available over there. Get that thing cleaned out!
