are you gonna be using a sump?

if so the AquaC EV180 or the euro-reef. I have had outstanding results with both.....

The Turboflotor can be finicky to get adjusted properly and their instructions are terrible. The Berlin (venturi models) come with a very cheap adjustment, not a needle valve. It is basically a plastic screw that crushes a piece of rubber airpline to restrict the amount of air getting uscked into the venturi. Euro-Reef and Aqua-C EV series are both superb.

I have used the Aqua-C Remora Pro in the past, and it gets a very good recommendation from me. Never had any problems with it, it pulled out a lot of gunk every week, and I never once had to clean it in 3+ years. If you're going to use a sump, then the Urchin Pro is the same performance model.

Peace,

I have a Turbofloter and I am finally very happy with it. It took a long time to get the thing running optimum. Alot of tinkering. Ever since I found the settings, it's been running beautifully for months.

Don't scrimp on this valuable piece of hardware. Get a good one.

I would definately recommend the Euro-Reef ES series.

I've never tried the Remora, nor the TurboFlotor.

My RedSea Berlin XL is sitting in my garage (it was replaced by the EuroReef). The Berlin is a pretty good skimmer, but nowhere near the quality and efficiency of the Euro-Reef. Plus, by the time you get a pump big enough to run it properly, you will have probably spent more $$$ than the Euro-Reef would have cost.

I'm looking at replacing the Reef Devil on my FOWLR tank with another Euro-Reef (or the skimmer that I'm going to build in the MACO class). I did the Beckett mod on the ReefDevil and it is way more noisy than the Euro-Reef. The ReefDevil skims very well, but I find I spend alot more time trying to keep the beckett injector clean and adjusting the water flow.

Overall, I would go with the Euro-Reef. They're NICE!!

Hope that helps,
Eboman

i have the turboflotor in sump model and it was a pain in the a** to set up. either i didn't have anything to skim out of my tank or my settlings were wrong. when it did work, it was pretty awesome. but yah it takes awhile to get it to work correctly. i just ordered a remora pro to replace the turboflotor so i'll see which one performs better if you're willing to wait.

For your sized tank I'd be recommending the EuroReef hands down. I've heard nothing but good reviews with this brand from everyone I've talked to. Good skimmer, energy efficient, etc.

I think the ES series is also made of extruded acrylic (as opposed to cell cast acrylic for the CS series - this might be where the "E" and the "C" come from in the model names - just a guess) and other lower cost materials to get the price down.

FWIW, IMO the ER (regardless of the series/model) is a FAR better skimmer than the other options listed above for your application.

what about the SouthBay 6-1 Skimmer by jeffs exotic fish....i was sent a picture and its a perfect replica, the only thin is i dont think it has the same impeller as the real euro reefs......will this effect its performance? or will i still get the same results

basically i am looking at either the es5-3 the real thing or the clone of the cs6-1.

the real cs6-1 is oveously a stronger skimmer then the es3-5 however since it is a lcone i am wondering if it will be as good

the SouthBay 6-1 Skimmer is a great by from jeffs exotic fish....
what do you all think ?
also anyone who has used or seen that skimemr please post your opinion on it. thanks again

I just received my ASM G2-X from ChampionLighting.com. I'm sure that this skimmer is oversized for my tank, but that will just eliminate my need for an upgrade later. It seems to work well (started producing good skimmate within a few hours / lots 'o tiny bubbles), and is well-built. There really aren't any instructions to speak of, but its mostly plug-and-play anyhow.

BTW, this is apparently a "clone" of the ER CS 6-2, and the sedra pump does utilize the "needle-wheel" impeller.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Tom
