Are there any corals other than Mushrooms that can be kept under NO lighting?
I was wondering the same thing. How deep can low light corals be kept with flourscents. My tank is 36"H.

im not sure, but i dont think you would really be able to keep any photosynthetic species of anything with NO lights.

and as far as depth i think 12in is what they say, anything after that depth the lights loose effect.

In my first reef tank I kept green star polyps and mushrooms under NO lights, four tubes about 12" from the corals. They spread OK, but I was also feeding the tank a lot. I know for sure that the little bright yellow polyps (someone help me, parazoanthus?) will spread in near darkness if fed well. With a tank as deep as 36", it's going to be hard to punch light down that far. In a shallower tank, it's probably cheaper in the long run to buy a couple PCs, and you'll have a much wider selection of corals.

All my tanks are lit with NO but I wouldn't light a 36"deep tank that way.
My deepest tanks are 24" and NO wall to wall lighting works for them, containing a clam and various LPS corals in addition to softies.

My tank is only a standard 10 gallon (which some of you probably know from the nano section, which is where I usually am). I am currently using a 15watt 18" power-glo. Yes I had a PC but after the worst possible week of power outage and power shorts it has been cooked. I can't afford to purchase a new one due to being a typical poor college student. So I am compromising and using an old hood and fixture I had laying around.
Clam huh? Sounds interesting, do you feed it, what kind, any other details?

I would NEVER recommend clams under NO lighting. Metal halides are definitely the best thing for clams. Although there are people keeping them under PC's I have seen them fade and wither away under PC's as well. While small clams rely to a great extent on feeding once they get over 2-2.5" they rely on lighting and NO's are not sufficient for this.

Nor would I. I just thought it would be interesting to find out some info, after all, I love pushing the limits (within reason).

Remember Julian Springs 10 gallon that was solid wall-to-wall corals? Wasn't that lit by a bunch of NO bulbs? Now I think he has halides on it but I seem to recall many NO bulbs.

Anyway, I think you could get Montipora digitata to grow under NO.
