Colt Coral Question

I was searching through the forum for a specific picture of a colt coral (which I still haven't found), and saw several pictures of colts that appear to be pink. I thought the natural color was brown, am I mistaken? If so, where do you get the pink ones?

Colt corals come in different shades of tan to light pink. If it is extremely bright/gaudy pink, it is probably dyed. These corals are to be avoided at all costs, and being a conscientious reefkeeper, you should inform the vendor of these resources that the marketing of such specimens is detrimental to not only the organisms and reefs, but the consumer as well.

Thanks Len! I wondered about the use of dye. It's really a shame this takes place.

The link below is an old thread with a picture of my colt. It is actually a bit pinker than it looks in the photo, and it is definitely not dyed. I've had well over a year at this point, and it grows like crazy.

I have had my colt for 2 years now. It has just split into 2. It is pink to dark pink.

If this coral was dyed, could the dye last this long or do I have a real pink one?

I have started fragging the colt a little and I am getting ready to swap some colt frags for something.

Rob,

I sure wouldn't think dye would last a couple of years, although I am no expert. Don't have anything to trade, as I only have a flat brain as far as corals, but I would be interested in purchasing a frag when you are ready. Send me a PM.

Hi Dave. That colt has grown significantly since that photo. At full extension, it's probably not twice as big but getting close. That's after one small frag was taken. Let me know if anyone wants a frag and is near Philly.

Very nice, Ben! Now, yours looks a bit lighter in color than most I have seen, or maybe it's just a lighting thing? I'm also kind of wondering about Ralphyhp's. The one picture looks fairly light, and more of a brown, while the others look more pink and reddish brown. Lighting? I sure would like to find a pink frag, if that is actually what it is!

it is a pink color.... but i would say closer to a very light brown.... i have seen pink specimens in well established reefs. but never in a LFS or a new reef. maybe it is a color shift they go thru....

Ben, Rob, Ralphy, or anyone else with a pink colt - Do you dose Iodine/Iodide? Wondering if that could contribute to the color.

I dose Lugols 4 drops every 4-5days.....

i also use bioplankton.... if that helps any....

Have seen several pics of clownfish in colts now. May be a better choice than the anemone I thought about getting some day.
