Well, it's been a while since I asked this question, and I'm curious how the present world economy has affected your hobby?

I don't think it is really the economy that is hurting me financially and keeping me from buying as much reefing stuff, I think it has more to do with that fact that I graduated from college a year ago and have boatloads of loan payoff, I have a hubby who is in out of state ($$$) Law school, so only I have an income to deal with all these bills. I need a calcium reactor so bad. I lost alot of sps because I couldn't keep the calcium up anymore. I will have to build one but it is a matter of getting off my duff and actually doing it!

The economy has me spending less money but more time in this hobby. The explaination is quite simple. I did not get a bonus this year and don't expect one next year either. Now I don't need bonus money to maintian my 75G and stock it fully. But to proceed with my next tank, a 300G built in, I'll have to built alot of it myself. I began by taking the MACO class and built my first calcium reactor. I'm in the middle of building my second one (for a friend). My plans is to continue the DIY stuff and slowly build everything I need for my new tank (except the tank itself, i'll prolly buy that.) So I am spending much less money due to the poor economy but spending way more time with all the DIY and MACO courses (I'm diffenately taking the skimmer class). I quite enjoy the DIY projects. :)

i am in the auto industry. the slow economy has drasticaly hit our sector. i am in the finance dept. of a dealership. currently we are down about 1/3rd in sales from last year. many other dealerships are reporting the same losses. i probably should not spend more on my hobby but i am. i am in the process of building a new home and i am incorporating a 1000-1200 gallon grow out tank. maybe i am nuts but interest rates are ceratinly low right now and the economy is only about 6-8 months away from realy picking up. i hope...

I'm in the Mortgage Industry. We have been busier then ever with Refi's and new purchases.

I also think Southern CA has it's own economy. The freeways are busier then ever, people are buying new houses, my LFS's has never been busier, the malls are always packed, want-ads in the newspapers are full...I think the economy is being "analyzed" to much...of course it's not what it was during the "tech boom" but it's not 1931 either.

I just got a good raise. 8)

My tank is pretty established now, so there isn't a need to make any major purchases of livestock or new equipment. I don't really have the desire to add any more tanks either, although at some point I would like to set up a clown nursery and/or a small seahorse display.

Since I made my wife promise to get the tank completed and stocked before she buys her Blue Fronted Amazon parrot, she has been buying whatever I say we need. "Honey we need this, Honey we need that"! I still think I could have asked for more and she would of done it. She really wants that bird!

Hasn't changed much for me excpet the overtime for the homeland security stuff. I dont want much of just enough to make the check a little bigger :D .

I spend more tie with the two reefs. the 90g and the nano. I have also got a little girl to attend to also...

Criminals are criminals.. they take advantage of both good and bad situations.. it has been busy in south central LA like normal... multiple homicides a day. in my area Narcotics and gangs are a problem..... so i guess my job is pretty secure.... plenty to do. and plenty of reasons to de-stress with a reef!

:D

the amouont I spend has been curtailed but not for the reasons listed, so I didnt vote. This time last year I was in negotiations on taking over the salt only LFS I ran(second full time job didnt have time for anything but work and sleep) The owner thought they could get more money out of someone they new that had money to blow so the store was sold out from under me(I had the contracts drawn up and came in to open the store to find him already there) so that cut my purchases in half, and then I moved to a new apt, rent is a bit higher but its a nicer place and I can stand in front of the windows with no worrys now, thats cut the purchases down by half again. And this past January, my live in GF dumped me and moved back in with her ex-husband(who she was cheating on me with)so again increase in rent but I'm helping the guy that bought the LFS shut his store down(he didnt know what he was doing obviously) and I have been working in trade for goods so I have been able to restart my reef- I suspect the Ex did something to it , I had a bad crash. on the up side I have a new 75 gallon cycling right now, a new Emerald moray and a new GF thats VERY into me(my friends are disgusted by the affection we give each other) :D

I have been very fortunate in the sense that the economic downturn hasn't really affected me.

Knock on wood!

i was the single person who voted for:

"I've been spending more money but less time with reefkeeping"

the reason being that the economy has not affected my industry much and i am working lots. essentially i am spendning more $$ on buying a bunch of gadgets that "hopefully" can automate my tank therefore reduce the amount of tank husbandry involved. i.e. ph controller to regulate the co2 into reactor, temp controler for heaters and fans, etc.
